Despite recent speculation suggesting some MPs on the party's right-wing prefer Penny Mordaunt, the leader of the Commons, to initiate a leadership challenge, Harper affirmed Sunak's position as the Tory leader for the upcoming election.
Harper, speaking on Sky News's Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips program, expressed confidence in Sunak's leadership, stating, "Yes he will. He will take us into that election and he will set out very clearly that we’re a government with a plan."
Private polling reported by the Mail on Sunday paints a bleak picture for the Tories, indicating a potential historic defeat. The data suggests Labour could secure around 250 seats while the Conservatives might secure fewer than 150.
