  1. Decrease unwanted turnover. The turnover of competent em¬ployees decreases productivity for several reasons. Above all, there is a good chance that the competent employee’s replacement will be less pro¬ductive. This is particularly true while the new employee is still learning the job. Productivity is also lowered because of the expense and time in¬volved in recruiting and training a replacement. Both the manager and one or two co-workers may have to spend time training the new employee. In the process these people may become temporarily less productive. Al¬most any action taken by a supervisor that would increase job satisfaction and morale decreases the likelihood of turnover. Chapter 3 addresses this topic directly. A research study illustrates the specific impact supervisors can have in reducing turnover.5 First-level supervisors in a bank attended workshops on teller turnover and its causes. For a four-month trial period, the supervisors agreed to implement three actions they thought would re¬duce turnover:
