Treatment depends on the type of contusion. Mild contusion, in principle, does not need treatment. In case the skin is very reddened, cold can be applied to calm it more quickly. The third degree, on the other hand, will require medical attention, since there may be internal injuries beyond the hematoma. For their part, first and second degree contusions can be treated at home as follows:
Cold application: Cold should be applied to the bruise first to reduce inflammation and prevent internal blood from spreading further. It is important that you do not apply ice directly to the skin, but rather put a cloth or something in between the skin and the ice.
Heat application: Once 24 hours have passed since the blow, heat should be applied, as it helps the bruise to be absorbed.
Taking oral pain relievers: When it hurts, you can take oral pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.
Use of topical medications: There are different types of products for topical application, those that serve to absorb the hematoma faster and those that help to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
Finally, it is important to emphasize that contusions on the head are very delicate, so they do not have to be third degree to go to the doctor. If you notice other symptoms, such as dizziness or vomiting, you should go to the hospital to check for more serious injuries.
