Yes but you also has to consider conversions. Just because the the "pipe is huge" doesn't means you will get "a lot of water" to your website.
Like with pumping water the more you want out of it the more work you need to do. IE in order for Social Media to "pays off" you need to treat it like a totally separate project altogether.
At least on forums like here as long as you are an active member you bond to get returns. Maybe not a ton and half traffic but assuming your participation is quality and thought out you will likely still get decent conversions.

In the case of highly specialty IT topics such as web hosting, social media doesn't have much bragging rights. People go on social media to socialize, not read about servers or look for web hosting. Sure you can probably profit from some general advice, but how many of your friends will be able to explain how to secure a server?
And certain social media apps has next to zero value to web hosting industry, such as Instagram. More reach? You bet. But completely useless.
So for subjects such as these, people's best bet are still industry specific groups and communities, if they really want to be engaged.

Today you can buy the same shared hosting for $20-30/year, so it is no longer something consumers have to worry about. So I've noticed a decrease in C2B and an increase in B2B activity. Another reason for forums to decline is that most answers can be easily found through Google.
However, I still believe forums have their place. Whether it is a pet forum or web hosting, when you are faced with a question or an issue you need the answer to, you aren't going to be asking it through social media - you will want to come to a place full of enthusiasts and professionals specializing on the subject.
So yes, forum presence and participation is still very much important, for both SEO and general marketing. You are establishing yourself as a company and as a professional, and if you are around frequently, you increase chances of those coming here looking for advice or answers to notice your name.

This is the first time I hear that a lot of companies now use Facebook instead of forums. Certainly companies have a Facebook page, but never heard of a truly busy Facebook community that helps each other.
A number of years ago companies used forums for a few reasons. Partially it was a great way to create a community of members who might be coming to each others rescue (decreasing the volume of support requests), knowledge base, pre-sales center, marketing; and a great way to show that the company is also very active. There were a few successful companies whose websites were based on nothing but vBulletin.
But while a number of forum-based web hosting companies have declined (or those companies that offered a forum as a community option), I didn't really notice Facebook becoming much of a substitute in that function.
