  1. Brother—–could have done a much better work than he has done for
  2. those who were to be ministers. God is not pleased with his course in this
  3. matter. He has not adapted himself to the situation. Men who have left
  4. their fields of labor at a considerable sacrifice to learn what they could in
  5. a short time have not always received that help and encouragement which
  6. they should have had. Men who have reached mature years, even the
  7. meridian of life, and who have families of their own, have been subjected
  8. to unnecessary embarrassment. Brother—–is himself extremely sensitive,
  9. but he
  10. 27
  11. does not realize that others can feel the sting of ridicule, sarcasm, or
  12. censure as keenly as he. In this he has wounded his brethren and
  13. displeased God.
  14. Teachers in the College
  15. There is a work to be done for every teacher in our college. Not
  16. one is free from selfishness. If the moral and religious character of the
  17. teachers were what it should be, a better influence would be exerted upon
  18. the students. The teachers do not seek individually to perform their own
  19. work with an eye single to the glory of God. Instead of looking to Jesus,
  20. and copying His life and character, they look to self, and aim too much
  21. to meet a human standard. I wish I could impress upon every teacher a
  22. full sense of his responsibility for the influence which he exerts upon the
  23. young. Satan is untiring in his efforts to secure the service of our youth.
  24. With great care he is laying his snare for the inexperienced feet. The
  25. people of God should jealously guard against his devices.
  26. God is the embodiment of benevolence, mercy, and love. Those who
  27. are truly connected with Him cannot be at variance with one another.
  28. His Spirit ruling in the heart will create harmony, love, and unity. The
  29. opposite of this is seen among the children of Satan. It is his work to stir
  30. up envy, strife, and jealousy. In the name of my Master I ask the professed
  31. followers of Christ: What fruit do you bear?
  32. In the system of instruction used in the common schools the most
  33. essential part of education is neglected, namely, the religion of the Bible.
  34. Education not only affects to a great degree the life of the student in this
  35. world, but its influence extends to eternity. How important, then, that the
  36. teachers be persons capable of exerting a right influence. They should be
  37. men and women of religious experience, daily receiving divine light to
  38. impart to their pupils.
  39. 28
  40. But the teacher should not be expected to do the parent’s work. There
  41. has been, with many parents, a fearful neglect of duty. Like Eli, they
  42. fail to exercise proper restraint; and then they send their undisciplined
  43. children to college to receive the training which the parents should have
  44. given them at home. The teachers have a task which but few appreciate.
  45. If they succeed in reforming these wayward youth they receive but little
  46. credit. If the youth choose the society of the evil disposed and go on from
  47. bad to worse, then the teachers are censured and the school denounced.
  48. In many cases the censure justly belongs to the parents. They had the
  49. first and most favorable opportunity to control and train their children,
  50. when the spirit was teachable and the mind and heart easily impressed.
  51. But through the slothfulness of the parents the children are permitted to
  52. follow their own will until they become hardened in an evil course.
  53. Let parents study less of the world and more of Christ; let them put
  54. forth less effort to imitate the customs and fashions of the world, and
  55. devote more time and effort to molding the minds and character of their

  57. children according to the divine Model. Then they could send forth their
  58. sons and daughters, fortified by pure morals and a noble
