  1. Earth no longer
  2. hymns the Creator,
  3. the seven days of wonder,
  4. the Garden is over —
  5. all the stories are told,
  6. the seven seals broken
  7. all that begins
  8. must have its ending,
  9. our striving, desiring,
  10. our living and dying,
  11. for Time, the bringer
  12. of abundant days
  13. is Time the destroyer —
  14. In the Iron Age
  15. the Kali Yuga
  16. To whom can we pray
  17. at the end of an era
  18. but the Lord Shiva,
  19. the Liberator, the purifier?
  20. Our forests are felled,
  21. our mountains eroded,
  22. the wild places
  23. where the beautiful animals
  24. found food and sanctuary
  25. we have desolated,
  26. a third of our seas,
  27. a third of our rivers
  28. we have polluted
  29. and the sea-creatures dying.
  30. Our civilization’s
  31. blind progress
  32. in wrong courses
  33. through wrong choices
  34. has brought us to nightmare
  35. where what seems,
  36. is, to the dreamer,
  37. the collective mind
  38. of the twentieth century —
  39. this world of wonders
  40. not divine creation
  41. but a big bang
  42. of blind chance,
  43. purposeless accident,
  44. mother earth’s children,
  45. their living and loving,
  46. their delight in being
  47. not joy but chemistry,
  48. stimulus, reflex,
  49. valueless, meaningless,
  50. while to our machines
  51. we impute intelligence,
  52. in computers and robots
  53. we store information
  54. and call it knowledge,
  55. we seek guidance
  56. by dialling numbers,
  57. pressing buttons,
  58. throwing switches,
  59. in place of family
  60. our companions are shadows,
  61. cast on a screen,
  62. bodiless voices, fleshless faces,
  63. where was the Garden
  64. a Disney-land
  65. of virtual reality,
  66. in place of angels
  67. the human imagination
  68. is peopled with foot-ballers
  69. film-stars, media-men,
  70. experts, know-all
  71. television personalities,
  72. animated puppets
  73. with cartoon faces —
  74. To whom can we pray
  75. for release from illusion,
  76. from the world-cave,
  77. but Time the destroyer,
  78. the liberator, the purifier?
  79. The curse of Midas
  80. has changed at a touch,
  81. a golden handshake
  82. earthly paradise
  83. to lifeless matter,
  84. where once was seed-time,
  85. summer and winter,
  86. food-chain, factory farming,
  87. monocrops for supermarkets,
  88. pesticides, weed-killers
  89. birdless springs,
  90. endangered species,
  91. battery-hens, hormone injections,
  92. artificial insemination,
  93. implants, transplants, sterilization,
  94. surrogate births, contraception,
  95. cloning, genetic engineering, abortion,
  96. and our days shall be short
  97. in the land we have sown
  98. with the Dragon’s teeth
  99. where our armies arise
  100. fully armed on our killing-fields
  101. with land-mines and missiles,
  102. tanks and artillery,
  103. gas-masks and body-bags,
  104. our air-craft rain down
  105. fire and destruction,
  106. our space-craft broadcast
  107. lies and corruption,
  108. our elected parliaments
  109. parrot their rhetoric
  110. of peace and democracy
  111. while the truth we deny
  112. returns in our dreams
  113. of Armageddon,
  114. the death-wish, the arms-trade,
  115. hatred and slaughter
  116. profitable employment
  117. of our thriving cities,
  118. the arms-race
  119. to the end of the world
  120. of our postmodern,
  121. post-Christian,
  122. post-human nations,
  123. progress to the nihil
  124. of our spent civilization.
  125. But cause and effect,
  126. just and inexorable
  127. law of the universe
  128. no fix of science,
  129. nor amenable god
  130. can save from ourselves
  131. the selves we have become —
  132. At the end of history
  133. to whom can we pray
  134. but to the destroyer,
  135. the liberator, the purifier?
  136. In the beginning
  137. the stars sang together
  138. the cosmic harmony,
  139. but Time, imperceptible
  140. taker-away
  141. of all that has been,
  142. all that will be,
  143. our heart-beat your drum,
  144. our dance of life
  145. your dance of death
  146. in the crematorium,
  147. our high-rise dreams,
  148. Valhalla, Utopia,
  149. Xanadu, Shangri-la, world revolution
  150. Time has taken, and soon will be gone
  151. Cambridge, Princeton and M.I.T.,
  152. Nalanda, Athens and Alexandria
  153. all for the holocaust
  154. of civilization —
  155. To whom shall we pray
  156. when our vision has faded
  157. but the world-destroyer,
  158. the liberator, the purifier?
