  1. A Farewell to False Love
  2. Farewell, false love, the oracle of lies,
  3. A mortal foe and enemy to rest,
  4. An envious boy, from whom all cares arise,
  5. A bastard vile, a beast with rage possessed,
  6. A way of error, a temple full of treason,
  7. In all effects contrary unto reason.
  8. A poisoned serpent covered all with flowers,
  9. Mother of sighs, and murderer of repose,
  10. A sea of sorrows whence are drawn such showers
  11. As moisture lend to every grief that grows;
  12. A school of guile, a net of deep deceit,
  13. A gilded hook that holds a poisoned bait.
  14. A fortress foiled, which reason did defend,
  15. A siren song, a fever of the mind,
  16. A maze wherein affection finds no end,
  17. A raging cloud that runs before the wind,
  18. A substance like the shadow of the sun,
  19. A goal of grief for which the wisest run.
  20. A quenchless fire, a nurse of trembling fear,
  21. A path that leads to peril and mishap,
  22. A true retreat of sorrow and despair,
  23. An idle boy that sleeps in pleasure's lap,
  24. A deep mistrust of that which certain seems,
  25. A hope of that which reason doubtful deems.
  26. Sith then thy trains my younger years betrayed,
  27. And for my faith ingratitude I find;
  28. And sith repentance hath my wrongs bewrayed,
  29. Whose course was ever contrary to kind:
  30. False love, desire, and beauty frail, adieu.
  31. Dead is the root whence all these fancies grew.
  32. Sir Walter Raleigh
