Mildly interestingly, I have a Bootcamp partition, and in troubleshooting, I wanted to be sure the partition was fine, so I booted using Option to choose a drive to start up from. Booted to my Mac without safe mode and tried to reinstall this update. The new drive shows with the named partitioned file.

I'm hoping that the discs were not serialized to the machines that they might have come with. Once you do, hold down the power button to turn on your Mac. What worked for me, was starting up in Safe mode by holding down the shift key. I think one time it went way up but I don't remember the %. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again. I was having the same problem with the same MacBook and I had an Apple tech helping me but nothing she tried worked, she told me to take it to a store to get someone to work on it. I ran many many fsck -y in single user mode to get it to only 2 files and directories that were out of order.

It says the path is missing or damaged. You can restart and hard reset it a 100 times and you still get the same message. I have no idea why this happens, so if you know please comment below. Here is what fixed this problem for me. Click on the reset button but dont fully click the button. The top bar on the screen will pop up and will allow you the option to statup your disk on one of the tabs. It worked for me, hope it works for you.
