  1. UFO Sighting Report
  2. Oak Harbor, Washington
  3. January 28, 1988
  4. Principal Witness: Jerry Lang, age 45
  5. MUFON Field Investigator:
  6. Don Olson, Bothell, Washington
  7. Narrative:
  8. I ma
  9. rked the date down on the calendar. On midnight of the
  10. 27th (or Thurs
  11. day morning, January 28th) I was heading home down
  12. my driveway when I saw these 4 lights off to the right of Ika
  13. Island. There was 3 oran
  14. ge lights and a red light. I saw the
  15. lights to the right of the islan
  16. d, over the mouth of the [North
  17. Fork of the] Skagit River [near the to
  18. wn of La Conner,
  19. Washington]. I thought, well, the Indians fish in th
  20. e river for
  21. Steelhead--gillnetting--and I thought, it must be somebody
  22. was
  23. missing and the Navy was out looking for them in a helicopter.
  24. So I hopped out of the car
  25. and ran in the house and grabbed my
  26. binoculars.
  27. I co
  28. uld see it was no helicopter and I could have heard it
  29. if it was becau
  30. se the next night one came by, and I could hear
  31. it from here to there.
  32. So then I put the spotting scope [45x]
  33. on it and I couldn't see very g
  34. ood with it because it was very
  35. fuzzy. I should have probably turned it down [it was set on the
  36. highest power], but I didn't think a
  37. bout it, you know. So I
  38. just grabbed my binoculars and started lookin
  39. g and I thought,
  40. well, maybe there are some houses there I don't know
  41. about, but
  42. I knew there were no houses in that direction.
  43. I watched for 10-15 minutes. The orange lights got
  44. brighter and dimme
  45. r while the red light stayed pretty much the
  46. same. I thought, "well, that sure is odd", and I kept
  47. trying to
  48. figure it out. I could also see a little bit of white light
  49. out
  50. of the bottom of it, like it was shining [a beam of light]
  51. down. I sat here watching the lights and it never did move [the
  52. witne
  53. ss had the impression that all of the lights were part of
  54. the same obj
  55. ect].
  56. All of a sudden a "strobe light" flashed on top of the
  57. thing. Five to ten seconds later a single light appeared to the
  58. left. Off to the left, where the little hill is in there, up
  59. about ha
  60. lf as high as Ika Island. The light "just appeared". I
  61. didn't see it
  62. go over there, it just appeared there.
  63. It started getting b
  64. righter and dimmer; it got real bright
  65. and turned perfectly round, jus
  66. t like a fish egg or a balloon,
  67. and had a glow, a little halo all the way around it. Then t
  68. he
  69. light got dimmer and started toward the ground and became more
  70. disk shaped as it went down [note: the object could have
  71. changed its
  72. orientation to the witness to "edge on" or the
  73. change in shape could h
  74. ave been the result of atmospheric
  75. conditions].

  79. It went down to the ground. I watched for another 5-10
  80. minutes, when two lights appeared, over the land, at about the
  81. same he
  82. ight in the sky, three-quarters the height of Ika
  83. Island. Both lights
  84. turned perfectly round like an orange ball,
  85. with halos, then they star
  86. ted down to the ground becoming disk
  87. shaped about half way down to the
  88. ground. One went clear to the
  89. ground, the other I could see the light of in the treetops of a
  90. bushy area.
  91. So they both disappeared from view. Mea
  92. nwhile that big
  93. thing always stayed there on the right with the three
  94. orange
  95. lights and one red light on it. Another ten minutes or so went
  96. by, while these lights on the one remaining object continued
  97. ge
  98. tting brighter and dimmer. A strobe light flashed again, and
  99. within 2
  100. 0-30 seconds started getting very bright--like the sun.
  101. I could see th
  102. e right end of the object illuminated by the
  103. light, and it looked just
  104. like that [sketch, which shows half of
  105. a small oval on top of half of
  106. a larger oval]. The light glowed
  107. for maybe 30-40 seconds, and went ou
  108. t. As the light got dimmer,
  109. there was a dull after-glow in the area,
  110. like the after-glow you
  111. get from a TV screen after you turn off the set.
  112. I sat f
  113. or another half hour watching it. By this time it
  114. was getting to be a
  115. bout 1:50 a.m. and the dull-glowing light was
  116. still there but it wasn'
  117. t doing anything so I decided to go to
  118. bed. I set the alarm to go off
  119. at 3:00 a.m. to check on it. I
  120. woke up at 2:45 a.m. before the alarm
  121. went off and looked, and
  122. it was gone.
  123. I had the feeling that when the strobe light went off and
  124. five seconds later whe
  125. n the other two lights appeared that
  126. something came out of that big th
  127. ing and went over there. Maybe
  128. when the strobe light flashed one more
  129. time they came off the
  130. ground and went back in it or something. I saw
  131. 3 objects total,
  132. and the one on the right was much bigger than the two
  133. on the
  134. left. They appeared to be round balls as big as hot-air
  135. balloons, looking through t
  136. he binoculars. The distance across
  137. [from Whidbey Island] to there is
  138. one and a half to two miles to
  139. that flat area over the river there. I
  140. knew there shouldn't be
  141. any houses there.
  142. The next t
  143. hing I thought was that maybe there was a fire up
  144. on the foothills. W
  145. hen I got up the next morning the first
  146. thing I did was use the spotting scope to look all over that
  147. hillside and there hadn't been anythi
  148. ng burning over there.
  149. So I called MacIndoe because I'd rea
  150. d the newspaper article
  151. about his sighting and that's what he said he
  152. saw--a round
  153. orange ball, so what I saw must have been the same deal.

  158. I've got an airplane up in Anacortes. I'm a private
  159. p
  160. ilot. Three to four days later I flew my plane from Anacortes
  161. on a be
  162. aring from my home right over the spot. There are a few
  163. little cabins
  164. there by the river and a couple of farms back in
  165. there behind La Conne
  166. r. Other than that there is nothing in
  167. there.
