Recharge yourself: 20 ways to simplify your life
If your life became too complicated... it’s time to simplify... before it’s too late. However, simplify your life isn’t always a simple process!
But if you’re ready to give it a try, here is a great starter’s guide.
The Short List
Bottom line, there are really only two steps to simplifying:
Identify what’s most important to you.
Eliminate everything else.
Of course, that’s not terribly useful unless you can see how to apply that to different areas of your life, so here is a more detailed list...
The Long List
Make a list of your top 3-5 priorities. Create space in your life so you have more time for these things.
Evaluate your commitments. Drop those that aren’t in line with your top priorities.
Evaluate your time. Plan your day so you spend most of your time on what’s really important to you.
Spend time with people you love. And make it a quality time.
Spend time alone. Walk outside, meditate, listen to music, read... whatever makes you happy being with... you.
Simplify work tasks. Focus on the essential tasks (those that get you most results) and eliminate the rest.
Simplify home tasks. Again, focus on the most important, and for the rest - automate, eliminate, delegate, or hire help.
Single-task. Multi-tasking is more complicated, more stressful, and generally less productive.
Create morning and evening routines. A great way to simplify your life is to create routines at the start and end of your day.
Fill your day with simple pleasures. Make a list of your favorite simple pleasures, and sprinkle them throughout your day.
Eat healthy. Being unhealthy is complicated. Eating healthy simplifies your life in the long term.
Learn to say ‘no’. If you can’t say ‘no’, you will take on too much.
Learn what ‘enough’ is. Figure out how much (money, stuff, goals...) is enough. And then stop when you get there.
Limit your communications. Check email only once or twice a day, limit phone calls to certain times, etc...
Limit your media consumption. Cut off on TV, radio, Internet, newspapers, magazines, etc...
Get rid of stuff. Take a weekend and throw or donate all the stuff you don’t want or need anymore.
Simplify your wardrobe. Get rid of anything you don’t actually wear. And don’t buy anything new, before letting go of something old.
Declutter before organizing. If you declutter enough, you might not need to organize at all.
Go for quality, not quantity. Choose to have fewer things, but ones that you really love, and that will last for a long time.
Always ask: ‘will this simplify my life?’ If the answer is ‘no’, reconsider.
