few tldrs:

Tumblr killed itself, not porn.
yeah i wouldnt say blocking access to search engines on subdomains and pages that are very well linked strategy was a smart choice from SEO perspective. even if they wanted to kill porn traffic, or seo's attempts (the former doesnt make sense) then they just decreased their domain power in google eyes significantly because you should have linked pages indexable, crawlable and followable.
seems they were worried about getting banned in schools for "porn" so they banned search engines from accessing it. they will be still banned in schools though :)
PS, other interesting thought is that many tumblrs I did were REINDEX in BING ! so an much weaker engine with smaller index.
they were not related, and not even spammy, but they didnt reindex in google
did google upgrade so much that they can tell im spamming or did they downgrade so much that they cant even index sites that dont meet X conditions? or they decreased indexing for tumblr specifically, or tumblr fugged it up on their own
out of 166 well linked tumblrs blogs i registered few weeks ago maybe up to 10 of them reindexed
