Some time after China opposed cryptocurrency mining, the energy consumption in the Irkutsk region of Russia increased by 160%. The Ministry of Energy of Russia is already developing special electricity tariffs for cryptocurrency miners.
Russian Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov said that cryptocurrency miners in Russia should not consume electricity at tariffs for the general population.
The Minister of Energy also added that not only the Irkutsk region faced an explosive growth in energy consumption, but also many other regions. The main culprit is believed to be Chinese miners who left the country amid nationwide crackdowns on cryptocurrencies.
