Kim Ha-seong (29, San Diego Padres) is taking small steps toward returning from a shoulder injury.
“He started throwing across the infield on Friday, but he's still not 100 percent,” MLB.com reported.
However, San Diego manager Mike Shields said that “good progress has been made.”
Kim felt pain in his right shoulder while running back to first base against the opposition after hitting a single in the third inning of a game against the Colorado Rockies on March 19.
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan later diagnosed inflammation, and Kim was placed on the disabled list (IL) for the first time since joining the big leagues.
After recovering somewhat from the injury, Kim threw live batting practice at the team's spring training facility in Arizona on March 30 and returned to San Diego for a home game against the Detroit Tigers on April 3.
Since rejoining the team, Kim has been participating in team workouts. “He is taking batting practice at full strength,” MLB.com reported.
However, his return has been delayed because his throwing has not been perfect.
San Diego will play a three-game series at home against the San Francisco Giants from July 7-9.
“TBD-To Be Determined,” Schildt said when asked if Kim could return during the three-game series against San Francisco.
Kim, who is eligible for free agency after this season, is batting .233 (94-for-403) with 11 home runs, 47 RBI, 22 doubles, 60 runs scored and a .700 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) in 121 games this season.
