  1. In winter
  2. all the singing is in
  3. the tops of the trees
  4. where the wind-bird
  5. with its white eyes
  6. shoves and pushes
  7. among the branches.
  8. Like any of us
  9. he wants to go to sleep,
  10. but he's restless—
  11. he has an idea,
  12. and slowly it unfolds
  13. from under his beating wings
  14. as long as he stays awake
  15. But his big, round music, after all,
  16. is too breathy to last.
  17. So, it's over.
  18. In the pine-crown
  19. he makes his nest,
  20. he's done all he can.
  21. I don't know the name of this bird,
  22. I only imagine his glittering beak
  23. tucked in a white wing
  24. while the clouds—
  25. which he has summoned
  26. from the north—
  27. which he has taught
  28. to be mild, and silent—
  29. thicken, and begin to fall
  30. into the world below
  31. like stars, or the feathers
  32. of some unimaginable bird
  33. that loves us,
  34. that is asleep now, and silent—
  35. that has turned itself
  36. into snow.
