Any religion is something different -in my opinion - from the simple "I belive X or Y as my creator". For example it's a system of value (the answer of the questions: What's really matter? What 's the means of your existence?) ...and so on...
Then, for to answer to your questions....What's your idea of "god"? You seem to assume the christian idea of "what a god is" as the only possible one but...Well, even different Christians have fully different ideas on "what the hell is" their so good god. You can see the Mormons : they believe that if u follow their rule, you will became a god, exactly like their "heavenly father" and you will rule your own world. Conclusion: their god is not really different from a man (my conclusion, of course). You don't need to create a life for to become a god.. It's so easy! But other Christians, have a different idea of their god. The god of the catholics, for example, is unique, practically "never really born",(because he/she was born "before the time"), omniscient, and so on...you will never become like "him", doesn't matter how hard you try...and how many miracles you can do...You can create life, if u want...But you will never become the boss of the next pope...I'm sorry!
The idea of a creator, (free) caring god ...is not the only possible one. I'm not christian. Prometheus... In the ancient Greece, Prometheus was regarded as something of unusual amongst the Gods...Moreover(in my opinion) it's hard to see the worship of him as something else that a secondary point in the ancient Greek religion.
When I try to explain to my friends "the idea of Gods" in the ancient Greece and elsewhere, I make this example: "You saw many Gods. For example, did you see the river "X"? A river is immortal (at least -from an human point of view), a river is more powerful than any single human, moreover: we could said that a river isn't alive? I guest no, we can not, and the ancient Greeks ...they were less able to us to tell what is "alive" and what is not...In ancient Greece, many rivers was regarded as Gods, and it's hard to prove that they was wrong, if u accept their idea of what a god is. Usually a friend, at that point, interrupts me, and says: "But the river didn't care about us, and surely it didn't create us!". And I reply: "Why a God should care about us? Of course, some Gods do it, but...the idea of a (free) caring God -moreover a creator one - was not theirs". Of course, there was also other things that make you different from a God, but it's a good starting point.
I will imagine this one: an alien came to me and show me the evidence to be the one who create the planet. Will I adore him? I'm sorry, but ...no.
