  1. A Brave and Startling Truth
  2. We, this people, on a small and lonely planet
  3. Traveling through casual space
  4. Past aloof stars, across the way of indifferent suns
  5. To a destination where all signs tell us
  6. It is possible and imperative that we learn
  7. A brave and startling truth
  8. And when we come to it
  9. To the day of peacemaking
  10. When we release our fingers
  11. From fists of hostility
  12. And allow the pure air to cool our palms
  13. When we come to it
  14. When the curtain falls on the minstrel show of hate
  15. And faces sooted with scorn are scrubbed clean
  16. When battlefields and coliseum
  17. No longer rake our unique and particular sons and daughters
  18. Up with the bruised and bloody grass
  19. To lie in identical plots in foreign soil
  20. When the rapacious storming of the churches
  21. The screaming racket in the temples have ceased
  22. When the pennants are waving gaily
  23. When the banners of the world tremble
  24. Stoutly in the good, clean breeze
  25. When we come to it
  26. When we let the rifles fall from our shoulders
  27. And children dress their dolls in flags of truce
  28. When land mines of death have been removed
  29. And the aged can walk into evenings of peace
  30. When religious ritual is not perfumed
  31. By the incense of burning flesh
  32. And childhood dreams are not kicked awake
  33. By nightmares of abuse
  34. When we come to it
  35. Then we will confess that not the Pyramids
  36. With their stones set in mysterious perfection
  37. Nor the Gardens of Babylon
  38. Hanging as eternal beauty
  39. In our collective memory
  40. Not the Grand Canyon
  41. Kindled into delicious color
  42. By Western sunsets
  43. Nor the Danube, flowing its blue soul into Europe
  44. Not the sacred peak of Mount Fuji
  45. Stretching to the Rising Sun
  46. Neither Father Amazon nor Mother Mississippi who, without favor,
  47. Nurture all creatures in the depths and on the shores
  48. These are not the only wonders of the world
  49. When we come to it
  50. We, this people, on this minuscule and kithless globe
  51. Who reach daily for the bomb, the blade and the dagger
  52. Yet who petition in the dark for tokens of peace
  53. We, this people on this mote of matter
  54. In whose mouths abide cankerous words
  55. Which challenge our very existence
  56. Yet out of those same mouths
  57. Come songs of such exquisite sweetness
  58. That the heart falters in its labor
  59. And the body is quieted into awe
  60. We, this people, on this small and drifting planet
  61. Whose hands can strike with such abandon
  62. That in a twinkling, life is sapped from the living
  63. Yet those same hands can touch with such healing, irresistible tenderness
  64. That the haughty neck is happy to bow
  65. And the proud back is glad to bend
  66. Out of such chaos, of such contradiction
  67. We learn that we are neither devils nor divines
  68. When we come to it
  69. We, this people, on this wayward, floating body
  70. Created on this earth, of this earth
  71. Have the power to fashion for this earth
  72. A climate where every man and every woman
  73. Can live freely without sanctimonious piety
  74. Without crippling fear
  75. When we come to it
  76. We must confess that we are the possible
  77. We are the miraculous, the true wonder of this world
  78. That is when, and only when
  79. We come to it.
  80. Maya Angelou
