How about creating some great content so that people would want to link to it? After all, isn't that what linking on the internet was originally all about?

Sure, I've read a bit on the topic, and it certainly is something - maybe an option. But wow - it takes a lot of time and effort. Time and effort you could be spending researching, adding and tweaking your own content and working it on social media. And by "working it", I don't mean being a pest, because pests are usually ousted at the first sign of spamming.
