  1. Ghana is West Africa’s most impacted nation behind Nigeria, at a point in May 2020, Ghana led the regional case load. June has started with progressive lifting of more virus restrictions.
  2. President Akufo-Addo in his tenth address announced that whiles borders remained closed, some categories of academic institutions are allowed to resume, religious places can also reopen with strict conditions and the observance of health protocols.
  3. Social gatherings -weddings, funerals etc. – are to be allowed under certain conditions – among others with maximum 100 participants. As the 2020 polls loom, even political activity is allowed to be undertaken.

  5. July 23: 29,672 cases; specialist hospital completed
  6. Ghana’s first Infectious Disease Isolation and Treatment Centre is set to be commissioned this Friday 24th July, 2020. The commissioning will be done by Vice president Mahamadou Bawumia, in the absence of the president who is in Mali on mediation efforts.
  7. The 100-bed treatment facility is an initiative of a private-sector group that pooled resources from partners and citizens. The Ghana Armed Force were at the heart of the construction process. It stands at the Ga East Municipal Assembly located in the Greater Accra region.
  8. The objective of the Ghana COVID-19 Private Fund according to their website is: “To provide a prompt response to the hardship and suffering arising out of the COVID-19 Pandemic.”
  9. Whiles also partly financing Government of Ghana’s interventions and equipping select health service in the fight against Covid-19 in Ghana.
  10. Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta today presented a mid-year budget in which he made some announcements relative to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  11. He announced that government will continue electricity subvention for the lowest consumers till the end of the year. The president announced a three-month free utility regime – water, electricity – months back.
  12. “Ghanaians being asked to stay home, or work from home if possible, and observe hygiene protocols, government substantially covered the cost of electricity and water services from April-June, 2020,” the Minister said.
  13. On governments plan to build 88 hospitals, he stressed that a decision had been taken that only Ghanaian companies will be awarded contracts.
