China is North Korea's main ally, but Beijing condemned Pyongyang's nuclear test.
On January 6, an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred in North Korea and the country claimed to have successfully tested a hydrogen bomb underground.
Nonetheless, nuclear experts questioned North Korea's statement by saying the size of the earthquake is not big enough for a hydrogen bomb.
Speaking after talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Kerry said the two sides agreed to the need for "a strong resolution against North Korea and expressed restriction of trade in goods and services on the border of China and North Korea is one of the steps that can be taken."
