  29. Adventuring, or in a town, a courier will find you. He will
  30. give you two letters:
  31. A ~ WANTED, A GOOD HOME
  32. This letter will give you the opportunity to adopt two
  33. children. Go to see Constance Michel at the Honor Hall
  34. Orphanage In Riften and she will explain that you need to
  35. have a suitable home, one with a room for children. If you
  36. already own a home, just go see the Jarl's Steward for that
  37. particular home to add the room. The home in Solitude is a
  38. good choice because you do not give up another room for it
  39. and everyone in the family seems to like it there. An odd
  40. thing happened when I sent my first child there. My wife,
  41. who I had asked to join the Blades with me, became AOL when
  42. I let the Dragon live, but re-appeared in my home in Solitude
  43. along with the first child. I'm curious if this happens to
  44. anyone else who has misplaced their spouse! Anyway, once you
  45. have met the requirement, you can either return to Honor Hall
  46. Orphanage and adopt one or two kids, or you can look around
  47. the towns and villages for others. Just speak to them to get
  48. their background stories. If they're available for adoption,
  49. that option will be available. I particularly like the poor
  50. little flower girl in Windhelm, myself. I wanted to adopt the
  51. kid hires you to off the head of the Orphanage but he isn't
  52. adoptable, apparently. You can play games with your kids, buy
  53. or make them gifts, and give them allowances. One of the kids
  54. will eventually ask for a pet. So far, we've adopted a rabbit,
  55. and after a wolf ate the rabbit (I was living at Lake View
  56. Manor at the time), a skeever. Personally, I prefer dogs!
  57. And you can have a dog, if you like. Without a companion, go
  58. in search of a stray, ask it to join you, then bring it back
  59. to the home you want it in and ask it to wait there for you.
  60. Go to adventuring until you get a notice that the dog got
  61. tired of waiting. Generally, he stays in the house, even if
  62. the house is full of people.
  63. Achievement: PROUD PARENT (adopt a child)

  65. B ~ A LETTER FROM THE STEWARD OF FALKREATH
  66. Who the Jarls and Stewards are depend on if you're just
  67. starting or you've already finished Skyrim. But I believe
  68. the Housecarls stay the same.
  69. B1. LAKEVIEW MANOR ~ Falkreath Hold
  70. You need to be the Thane of Falkreath to buy the property to
  71. build Lakeview Manor, so speak to the Jarl first. Even if you
  72. are already a Thane, he'll make you one again. If you're not
  73. one, you need to do the quests necessary for it. Anotherwards,
  74. take quests from the Jarl, the Jarl's Steward and the locals.
  75. Once you're a Thane, you'll get a Housecarl, Rayya. Have her
  76. be your companion. Don't worry, it's just temporary, you can
  77. go back to your favorite companion afterwards. Speak to the
  78. Steward to buy the land for 5,000 gold.
  79. Achievement: LAND OWNER (buy a plot of land)
  80. Lakeview Manor is N/E of Falkreath and a short walk North of
  81. Pinewatch. There you find a starter pile of 20 logs, a wood
  82. chopping block, a drafting table, a carpenter's bench, an
  83. anvil and a chest. There are three iron ore veins to be found
  84. in the area. Two are in the rocks, behind and to the right of,
  85. the carpenter's bench. The third is N/E of the basic house. A
  86. corundum ore vein is S/W of the house. You also have a clay
  87. deposit and a stone quarry nearby. Unlike ore, clay and stone
  88. can be mined indefinitely. You can store these and all other
  89. supplies that you find, purchase and/or create, in the chest.
  90. The chest has a few meager supplies to get you started, but
  91. to actually build anything, you need all necessary building
  92. supplies, except for the sawn logs, in your inventory.
  93. B2. WINDSTAD MANOR ~ Hjaalmarch Hold
  94. You need to be the Thane of Morthal to buy the property to
  95. build Windstad Manor. Once you're the Thane. you'll get your
  96. Housecarl, Valdimar. As before, have your Housecarl join you
  97. as a temporary companion. Speak with the Jarl's Steward,
  98. usually in one of the side rooms, to buy land for 5,000 gold.
  99. Windstad Manor is N/E of Morthal, halfway between Solitude
  100. and Dawn Star. As before, you have a starter pile of 20 logs,
  101. a wood chopping block, a drafting table, a carpenter's bench,
  102. an anvil, a chest, a clay deposit and a stone quarry. An iron
  103. ore vein is just South of the basic house.
  104. B3. HELJARCHEN HALL ~ The Pale
  105. You need to be the Thane of Dawnstar to buy the property to
  106. build Heljarchen Hall. Once you're the Thane, immediately grab
  107. Gregor, your Housecarl, as he tends to wander off and can be
  108. a bit of a pain to find. Do not speak to the steward this time.
  109. The Jarl will sell you the property directly, for 5000 gold. If
  110. you can't find your housecarl, Gregor, just go to the property
  111. without him and he'll eventually show up there while you're
  112. building.
  113. Achievement: LANDBARON (buy 3 plots of land)
  114. Heljarchen Hall is S/W of Dawnstar, S/E of Morthal and halfway
  115. between Dawnstar and Whiterun. As before, you have a starter
  116. pile of 20 logs, a wood chopping block, a drafting table, a
  117. carpenter's bench, an anvil, a chest, a clay deposit and a
  118. stone quarry. A corundum ore vein is East of the back left side
  119. of the basic house.

  121. C ~ THE BEGINNERS GUILD TO HOMESTEADING
  122. The book is located on the carpenter's bench. It tells you that
  123. you can build your house just a little at a time, as you pick
  124. up materials here and there, but doing so is riddled with very
  125. annoying glitches. Each time you go back, instead of it being
  126. where you left off,it goes back to zero. At first, if you exit
  127. the bench, then return, it will reset for you, but not always.
  128. The longer it has been since you began building the house, the
  129. less likely it'll reset for you. Creating an item that you have
  130. not yet made, will sometimes reset it, so if you absolutely
  131. must stop before finishing a project, write down what you still
  132. need to build. This problem plagues both the X-box 360 and the
  133. PS3 systems. I had to completely redo my last house to be able
  134. to finish it. Luckily I had a save to go back to. The worst is
  135. the Shrine in the cellar. Don't even think about starting it
  136. unless you have everything to finish the job, that includes
  137. finishing the quests for the Amulets of Mara and Talos, if you
  138. started them. Completely finishing one project at a time avoids
  139. most of the glitches. A project would be building:
  140. the Basic Small House
  141. all of the Outside Structures
  142. the Main Hall
  143. remodeling the basic house into an entryway
  144. an east wing
  145. a north wing
  146. a west wing
  147. a cellar
  148. furnishing a room
  149. I tried the option to have my Steward do the furnishings, twice.
  150. Both times, my steward took my money, but nothing was ever done
  151. so I ended up doing it myself, poorer for the attempt. How much
  152. of any one material you will need depends on what you decide to
  153. build. Me, I built everything. To build everything, build each
  154. house with different East, North and West wings.
  155. C1. Building Materials, the Anvil
  156. Before you can do anything, you need to stock up on iron and
  157. corundum ingots to make lots of nails, locks, hinges and iron
  158. fittings on the Anvil, under building materials:
  159. 2 Hinges require 1 iron ingot
  160. Iron Fittings require 1 iron ingot
  161. 1 Lock requires 1 iron ingot and 1 corundum ingot
  162. 10 Nails require 1 iron ingot
  163. C2. Other Building Materials
  164. Amulets can be bought from Clothiers, Jewelers or general
  165. Merchants under Apparel. They can also be found adventuring
  166. or thieving. If you want a complete altar in each house you
  167. will need three each of the following nine Amulets:
  168. Amulet of Akatosh
  169. Amulet of Arkay
  170. Amulet of Dibella
  171. Amulet of Julianos
  172. Amulet of Kynareth
  173. Amulet of Mara
  174. Amulet of Stendaar
  175. Amulet of Talos
  176. Amulet of Zenithar
  177. Soul Gems can be purchsed from merchants, found adventuring,
  178. thieving or can be found lying about and for sale at the
  179. College of Winterhold:

  182. Animal based materials can be found by hunting,adventuring,
  183. thieving or purchasing them from a General Merchant, Black Smith
  184. or Hunter. Ingredients can be bought from Alchemists. Dragon
  185. Bones and Scales, however, can only be obtained by killing
  186. dragons. You will need the following Animal based Materials:

  220. to make ingots. If you're having trouble finding a smelter, go
  221. to Whiterun. There is one to your right as you enter the city.
  222. Ores and Ingots can also be found Adventuring/thieving. Clay
  223. and Quarried Stone can only be found in random deposits, but
  224. luckily, there are conveniently located deposits on each of
  225. your properties. Gemstones are a by-product of mining but they
  226. can also be purchased or found.

  252. Go to the Drafting Table and clic on what you would like to
  253. build. You must build the Basic House First. Now, exit the
  254. Drafting Table and go to the Carptenter's Bench and click on:

  257. Foundation - 1 log and 10 quarried stone
  258. Wall Framing - 6 logs and 10 nails
  259. Walls - 2 logs, 8 nails, 4 clay

  263. Door - 1 iron fitting, 1 log, 1 lock, 2 hinges,

  265. D2. THE Outside Structures
  266. Click on:
  267. Animal Pen - requires 1 log
  268. The Animal Pen allows you to buy one cow and three
  269. chickens from your House
  270. Apiary (exclusive to LakeView Manor) - requires 2 logs, 1 nails
  271. and 2 straw
  272. Armorer Workbench - requires 2 quarried stone, 1 iron ingot and
  273. 1 log
  274. Garden - requires 1 log
  275. The Garden allows you to plant 11 plants. No, you can't
  276. use plants from a DLC. I suggest you pick the plants
  277. you use most in your alchemy. Alchemy needs change as
  278. the game progresses, but no worries, you can change the
  279. plants whenever you like.
  280. Grindstone - requires 1 quarried stone, 1 log and 1 iron fitting
  281. Smelter - requires 2 iron fittings, 5 iron ingots, 6 clay and
  282. 4 quarried stone
  283. The smelter will save you trips to Whiterun as you'll be
  284. doing a lot of smelting.
  285. Stable - requires 3 logs and 5 nails
  286. The Stable allows you to buy a horse from your Steward
  287. The Fish Hatchery (exclusive to Windstad Manor) - requires 3 logs
  288. 3 quarried stone and 4 nails
  289. The Hatchery comes with a couple of Horkers and the option
  290. to donate one of each fish or fish byproduct to stock your
  291. respawning fishery:
  292. Abecean Longfin
  293. Clam Meat to acquire Clams
  294. Cyrodilic Spadetail
  295. Histcarp
  296. River Betty
  297. Salmon Roe, found in the kitchen, to acquire Salmon
  298. Silverside Perch

  300. The Mill (exclusive to Heljarchen Hall) - 2 logs, 2 quarried stone
  301. and 2 iron fittings
  302. The Mill allows you to make flour from wheat which allows
  303. you to bake in the oven. This makes Heljarchen Hall a good
  304. place to build the Kitchen, which not only gives you a new
  305. ingredient, Salmon roe but new baked goods.
  306. Once the Basic House and the Outside Structures are complete, ask
  307. your Housecarl to be your House Steward instead. You can now make
  308. purchases from him/her of the following:
  309. A Carrage with a driver 500 gold
  310. A Bard 1,500 gold
  311. A Horse 1,000 gold
  312. A Cow 200 gold
  313. 3 Chickens 25 gold each
  314. Should one of your animals die, they become available to buy again
  315. from your Steward. You may now also buy lumber from him/her, saving
  316. you trips to a mill. You may also buy quarried stone and clay, but
  317. seriously, how lazy can you get, it's just outside, for free!
  318. D3. The Main Hall
  319. Click on:
  320. Door - 1 iron fitting, 1 log, 1 lock, 2 hinges and 2 nails
  321. Wall Foundation - 4 logs and 30 quarried stone
  322. Floor - 6 quarried stone
  323. Wall Framing - 16 logs and 20 nails
  324. First Level Walls - 4 logs, 16 nails and 8 clay
  325. Floor Supports - 6 logs and 10 nails
  326. Roof Framing - 10 logs
  327. Second Level Walls - 12 nails, 8 nails and 4 logs

  330. D4. Remodeling the Basic House
  331. Once the Main Hall is built, you may return to the Drafting Table
  332. and re-model the basic house into an entryway at no cost. If you
  333. have already furnished the basic house, no worries, you won't lose
  334. anything. The furniture just gets redistributed between the main
  335. hall and the entryway. If you need ideas, I built my first house
  336. with the Library, the Trophy Room and the Enchanter's Tower. I
  337. built my second house with The Armory, the Alchemy Lab and the
  338. Greenhouse (Windstead Manor, my favorite, has the Fish Hatchery
  339. which is good for the Alchemy Lab, as is the Greenhouse). I built
  340. my third house with the Kitchen, Storage and the Bedroom with the
  341. idea that it'd be a family home (HELJARCHEN HALL is a good place
  342. for the kitchen since it has the mill to make flour) You can have
  343. an Alchemy Table and Arcane Enchanter in each house even if you
  344. don't build the Alchemy Lab or Enchanter's Towers and you can still
  345. cook in each house without a kitchen. The Kitchen just offers
  346. new items to bake with respawnable butter and milk and one new
  347. ingredient, Salmon Roe. Reguardless of how you set them up, I
  348. suggest you have one of each wing addition as each has something
  349. different to offer in the way of respawnable food and ingredients.
  350. D5. EAST WING
  351. Choose one of three:
  352. ARMORY ~ The Armory holds more armor and weapons

  654. WARNING! MAJOR GLITCHES AHEAD! before you start the Shrine, be sure
  655. that you have every item needed for the Shrines. None should be stuck
  656. in your inventory because of unfinished quests. There are three quest
  657. amulets that I can recall:
  658. The Amulet of Mara (If this amulet is stuck in your inventory as a
  659. quest item, it's because you haven't finished one of two quests. The
  660. one for Dinya Balu or the one for Maramal, both from the temple of Mara
  661. in Riften . Dinya, who can be found in the temple, is the one who gave
  662. you the amulet so that you might help lovers. You must wear the amulet
  663. during these quests. Maramal, can be found at either the temple or
  664. in the Bee and Barb in Riften. His quest is for you to find a spouse.
  665. To find a suitable spouse, wear the amulet and speak with people you're
  666. interested in. If they're available, an option to marry will be in the
  667. dialogue. You can even marry someone from Solstheim if you have the DLC
  668. Dragonborn. I married a girl from Skall Village. Avoid marrying quest
  669. people or merchants as they won't be replaced. When you find someone
  670. agreeable, SAVE (it's terribly important to save here) and return
  671. immediately to Maramal in Riften. Pay very close attention to the
  672. instructions about the marriage ceremony or you can miss your own
  673. wedding and ruin the quest. Once married, the amulet of Mara is no
  674. longer a quest item.
  675. The Amulet of Talos (if this is an unfinished quest item, don't despair,
  676. it's quite fixable even if you have already finished the game, like I did.
  677. Go to Solitude and look for Svari. She's one of the three kids running
  678. around playing games. You may have to play with the kids first, but I'm
  679. not sure. If so, I believe it's the boy who asks you to play tag, or was
  680. it hide n seek. Anyway, afterwards, offer to speak with her mother, Greta.
  681. Activate the quest and your local map will show you where she is.
  682. Sympathyze with her. If you previously called her brother a traitor, as I
  683. did, just change your answer, then say that Svari asked you to speak with
  684. her and she'll ask you to get the Amulet of Talos off her brother's body,
  685. which you obviously already did or you wouldn't be stuck with the amulet.
  686. However,if Greta is dead, you're outta luck)

  688. remember where it goes. to Torbjorn Shatter-Shield in Windhelm. He wants
