  1. On the Pulse of Morning
  2. A Rock, A River, A Tree
  3. Hosts to species long since departed,
  4. Marked the mastodon,
  5. The dinosaur, who left dried tokens
  6. Of their sojourn here
  7. On our planet floor,
  8. Any broad alarm of their hastening doom
  9. Is lost in the gloom of dust and ages.
  10. But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,
  11. Come, you may stand upon my
  12. Back and face your distant destiny,
  13. But seek no haven in my shadow,
  14. I will give you no hiding place down here.
  15. You, created only a little lower than
  16. The angels, have crouched too long in
  17. The bruising darkness
  18. Have lain too long
  19. Facedown in ignorance,
  20. Your mouths spilling words
  21. Armed for slaughter.
  22. The Rock cries out to us today,
  23. You may stand upon me,
  24. But do not hide your face.
  25. Maya Angelou
