50-100 GB of space is all I really need.
What should I be looking for on other specs and about how much should I expect it to cost? Anything good for $5?
ServerHub is an option
BuyVM has new storage that can be added to VPS, $5 per 1TB. You'd have to get a VPS to attach it to though but still good for the storage. (here's link they posted on another forum)
RamNode also has a plan with 120GB HDD for $8/quarterly, 150GB for $5/mo.

If you already have an Office 365 account you can use the free command line version of www.duplicacy.com to store all your backups there for free. I have a blog post about setting it up if you're interested. Or store them on Google Drive for $2/month. Cloud storage is typically more resilient than a VPS. Yet another option is to use a personal NAS drive. More than one backup is good!

Yeah, I'll take you up on that blog post.
You can check Linus way of backup: youtube.com/watch?v=y2F0wjoKEhg
Well, if the VPS is for backups important thing you should look for is if the VPS has redundancy (RAID10) or not.

A good solution is to use Amazon S3 and/or Google Cloud.
The pricing is very cheap. For storing 50 GB of date under the “Standard – Infrequent Access Storage”, one is paying only $0.625 per month at the rate of $0.0125 per GB.
Amazon S3 also offers a AWS Free Usage Tier as per which upon sign-up, new AWS customers receive 5 GB of Amazon S3 standard storage, 20,000 Get Requests, 2,000 Put Requests, and 15GB of data transfer out each month for one year.
Google Cloud also has a $300 in 6 months free trial.
Using the s3cmd tool, one can set up an automatic cron job to create nightly backups. The script will take a backup of the website files and mysql database and add it to s3/ google cloud and delete old files.
I have the script and am using it for myself.
