Recently Congress has taken a worrying interest in cutting and changing Social Security - seemingly without realizing just how far reaching its impact and benefits are.
Not only is Social Security absolutely vital to the Americans who rely on it as a social security net - it also has a tremendous, positive impact on our economy as a whole.
A new report by the AARP Public Policy Institute found that Social Security adds more than $1 trillion to the U.S. economy each year. Thanks to the benefits provided by Social Security, nearly 21.4 million Americans avoided poverty, including 1.1 million children and 14.5 million adults 65-plus.
Social Security is much more than the foundation of income security for people as they get older. It is also an important contributor to our overall economic health.
Congress must not cut Social Security without considering the devastating effects that would have on the seniors who rely on it AND our economy as a whole.
Let your representative know the financial security of all Americans and our future economic growth depend on preserving and strengthening Social Security, NOT cutting it!
