Gun is an intense and sobering dirge, with lyrics that offer a look into the minds of the unheard and the effect a weapon brings to those that feel voiceless.
The video uses clips that range from the comical to the tragic, displaying the consequences of irresponsibility when handling a firearm. Juxtaposing scenes that are in one moment whimsical, then suddenly deadly, are made more powerful and disturbing with the realization that all the images are real.
A previous independently produced version of the video has been repeatedly pulled from YouTube citing inappropriate content. In collaboration with the label the band hopes this new version will be allowed to stand as is, for what it is. Simply an artistic statement.
The song gun was played on legendary Los Angeles rock station KLOS FM, on the popular morning radio program "The Heidi and Frank Show". The band was featured on the segment "Stay or Go", a local music showcase. At the end of the first verse, the song was pulled and the station went immediately to commercial with no further explanation, and no return to the band. In spite of the censoring, the band was still selected to "stay" by the listeners.
Reaction to the song has illicited strong opinions from listeners, running the gamut from those who feel the song is glorifyingly pro-gun, to those who feel it is decidedly anti-gun. The band's position is that it is neither. Gun is a song taking the point of view of those who feel their voices have been silenced and suddenly find a way to be heard.
