  1. An Almost Made Up Poem - Poem by Charles Bukowski
  2. I see you drinking at a fountain with tiny
  3. blue hands, no, your hands are not tiny
  4. they are small, and the fountain is in France
  5. where you wrote me that last letter and
  6. I answered and never heard from you again.
  7. you used to write insane poems about
  8. ANGELS AND GOD, all in upper case, and you
  9. knew famous artists and most of them
  10. were your lovers, and I wrote back, it’ all right,
  11. go ahead, enter their lives, I’ not jealous
  12. because we’ never met. we got close once in
  13. New Orleans, one half block, but never met, never
  14. touched. so you went with the famous and wrote
  15. about the famous, and, of course, what you found out
  16. is that the famous are worried about
  17. their fame –– not the beautiful young girl in bed
  18. with them, who gives them that, and then awakens
  19. in the morning to write upper case poems about
  20. ANGELS AND GOD. we know God is dead, they’ told
  21. us, but listening to you I wasn’ sure. maybe
  22. it was the upper case. you were one of the
  23. best female poets and I told the publishers,
  24. editors, “ her, print her, she’ mad but she’
  25. magic. there’ no lie in her fire.” I loved you
  26. like a man loves a woman he never touches, only
  27. writes to, keeps little photographs of. I would have
  28. loved you more if I had sat in a small room rolling a
  29. cigarette and listened to you piss in the bathroom,
  30. but that didn’ happen. your letters got sadder.
  31. your lovers betrayed you. kid, I wrote back, all
  32. lovers betray. it didn’ help. you said
  33. you had a crying bench and it was by a bridge and
  34. the bridge was over a river and you sat on the crying
  35. bench every night and wept for the lovers who had
  36. hurt and forgotten you. I wrote back but never
  37. heard again. a friend wrote me of your suicide
  38. 3 or 4 months after it happened. if I had met you
  39. I would probably have been unfair to you or you
  40. to me. it was best like this.
