  1. At department parties, I eat cheeses
  2. my parents never heard of—gooey
  3. pale cheeses speaking garbled tongues.
  4. I have acquired a taste, yes, and that's
  5. okay, I tell myself. I grew up in a house
  6. shaded by the factory's clank and clamor.
  7. A house built like a square of sixty-four
  8. American Singles, the ones my mother made lunches
  9. With—for the hungry man who disappeared
  10. into that factory, and five hungry kids.
  11. American Singles. Yellow mustard. Day-old
  12. Wonder Bread. Not even Swiss, with its mysterious
  13. holes. We were sparrows and starlings
  14. still learning how the blue jay stole our eggs,
  15. our nest eggs. Sixty-four Singles wrapped in wax—
  16. dig your nails in to separate them.
  17. When I come home, I crave—more than any home
  18. cooking—those thin slices in the fridge. I fold
  19. one in half, drop it in my mouth. My mother
  20. can't understand. Doesn't remember me
  21. being a cheese eater, plain like that.
