  1. Looking for some KVM VPS provider recommendations...
  2. I have been using a VPS provider for many years that I really like, unfortunately, the VPS is not KVM based and with our very restrictive settings with network blocks and csf file surveillance, it requires kernel settings to be adjusted that can only be done in a KVM setup without impacting consistency of their model.

  14. The problem now is that they are asking about 50% more monthly fees for a KVM VPS that has about 20% less disk space (even though it is SSD, the old one is spinning disk).
  15. I cannot justify a 50% price increase for pretty much zero added value and less disk space. Performance is not a real concern, so below is what I am looking for. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!
  16. KVM VPS
  17. - U.S. data center
  18. - Centos 7-64
  19. - 4 GB RAM
  20. - 2 cores (4 preferred)
  21. - 120 GB HDD (SSD preferred, but not required)
  22. - 5 total IPs
  23. - Cpanel
  24. - Softaculous
  25. - Unmanaged is fine
  26. - 3 TB bandwidth minimum
  27. - Price below $60, monthly billing
  28. Not interested in one of the companies that is known for hosting criminals and that is getting blacklisted in every security concerned network (OVH, singlehop, linode, krypt etc.)
  29. Have you checked the offers section? Now that Black Friday has recently finished some good offers on KVM might have been missed. In terms of migration will you require migration too? Also, what about DDoS Protection, additional IP's?
  30. Also, curious as to how much more your current host is asking you, and are they using OpenVZ?
  31. Even though I looked around a bit for the Black Friday deals, I did not see anything that was exciting me too much. Mostly, it was inflated prices to begin with, so high discounts could be advertised ;-)
  32. - No migration help needed
  33. - Typically, no support help is needed either (reached out to my current provider a handful of times over 5 years)
  34. - Current pricing is $55, new pricing $75 (both managed though and their support is outstanding if needed)
  35. - Additional IPs - see above. A total of 5 is what I have right now, 4 may do though.
  36. - DDOS protection would be nice, I simply considered that a standard up to a certain bandwidth.

  42. In that case your budget is perfect for an unmanaged even with the Cpanel included or at additional costing. The important thing to consider here though is although you may not need support help having the Management there as an option is worth while, now if you had outstanding support does it make sense paying the higher rate for it? In dire cases where you may need it? or would be able to do without and technically manage it yourself if things do go sideways at the OS level??
  43. I know that I ultimately can fix all problems that might come up (with 30 years IT/Linux experience, that is not a real concern - besides maybe a kernel update going bad and requiring a restore), so the support is a nice feature to offload some of the work, but not a requirement.
  44. The part that makes me look for an alternative is that I feel I am being screwed over - for the similar kind of service and horsepower, they ask about 50% more simply for the convenience of being able to update and tune the kernel of my VM. Just does not sound right with me.

  47. I’d recommend HostDime. They have a great network.
  48. If you're willing to source cPanel yourself, you can get a physical server from PhoenixNAP for $35 that covers your requested specifications.
  49. WonderProxy can help your team do localization testing from around the globe. With more than 250 locations there's no excuse for not testing your website.
  50. The Where's It Up? API can help multiply your monitoring infrastructure. You can request pings, traceroutes, DNS checks, and HTTP checks from all across the WonderProxy network.

  52. So, to update the kernel, you need to pay more?

  54. No, it is about kernel setting that have to be set on the virtualization layer and would impact all systems on the host (in this case /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watches which was set too low to at 65535 to allow monitoring of all users www directories). If they had changed it, it would have had to be done on all servers to maintain consistency and redundancy, so I get that they were reluctant - even though I don't believe that the parameter limit at 65535 is reasonable, especially not on a system that is being sold as a reseller product.
  55. The KVM virtualization gives the user more flexibility in that regards and would allow adjusting parameters like this specifically and only for my machine. So, if I want to adjust the kernel parameter, it can only be done on a KVM server which then costs about 50% more without any additional added value (and having about 20% less disk capacity at the 50% increased price).
  56. And yes, I understand that KVM allows dedicated vs. shared resources and the new package was based on SSD, but if neither CPU, memory, disk or network resources/performance ever were a problem, the actual value of that is pretty much zero to me, even though from a technology perspective it could be considered "cool upgrade".

  59. A BuyVM "slice" with 8 GB of RAM would do you. 160GB of disk space, 2 dedicated cores, KVM virtualised - @ $30 per month.
  60. That gives some margin to your budget to add those additional IPs and the cPanel license. (Stock comes and goes, recently it seems throughout the day)
