  1. Looking for reasonably priced SSD VPS with Plesk & good support
  2. I'm looking for a reasonably priced (budget upto US$50/month) SSD VPS at a host which is reliable, having great uptime & good support.

  13. +++++++++++++++
  14. Main things I'm looking at:
  15. 4GB RAM
  16. 40-50GB SSD space
  17. 2 CPU cores
  18. 1-2TB monthly bandwidth
  19. 2 IPs
  20. Plesk Onyx Web Host Edition (don't want domain restrictions) - no I don't want cPanel
  21. SSH access (wouldn't need sudo except in beginning to setup ClamAV for emails since Plesk doesn't come with it)
  22. US West Coast location preferred for the server
  23. Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04 preferred - I'm more comfortable with this than CentOS
  24. I don't need a managed VPS but good support is something I want so that:
  25. It does not take 24 hours to respond to a support ticket marked as critical
  26. I'm not asked to enable root user (to run a repair script) even when I've provided a sudo user's creds
  27. This VPS will be only for personal use where I would put up some WordPress blogs for myself & some of my family - so not something that would be hogging resources.
  28. I've been using Media Temple's Grid Service for years and now I want to move from that to a VPS because they do not have any near future plans to upgrade to PHP 7.2 and its a damn pain to setup a Laravel app there (shared hosting platforms are usually not setup to handle those). I've had good experience with MT over the years & I'm not a disgruntled customer - its just that I think I've outgrown their offering and their VPS service is a bit expensive for me.
  29. A host not offering Plesk is a deal breaker for me, I'd rather not go & get my own license for Plesk (otherwise I would have set up a VPS on DO already).
  30. Any recommendations?
  31. Why do you want to use Plesk over Cpanel? I'll only ask this once and is most likely what everyone else is thinking too...
  32. Also, if you still got your own Plesk license and went with the same specs on DO, you wouldn't be off your budget so why is that off the table?
  33. US West Coast location preferred for the server
  34. This is just a preference, US East Coast or Central locations are not deal breakers. I want it within continental US though.

  36. cPanel & Plesk are pretty much same feature wise, I have used cPanel for years so I'm familiar/comfortable with it as well. Its just that Plesk offers automatic Git based deployment of code via webhooks out of the box while cPanel's implementation is rudimentary in the sense that it creates Git repo on the server & does not support automatic code deployment from external repos hosted at Github or Bitbucket etc. I can set it up myself on a cPanel based VPS but I'd rather keep things which require extra work from me to a minimum since this is for personal use.

  39. I don't have a Plesk license - which is what I said, that if I have to get my own Plesk license then I can just spin up a DO instance & put it there itself. Its not off the table, I'll go DO/Linode route if I don't find anything better support wise. I have no experience with Linode, but per my past experience DO support is rather minimal (favouring knowledgebase articles) & one is pretty much on his own there. I'm not a professional server admin but I do know my way around a server which is why I think its better to go with a provider which can offer decent tech support.

  41. Hmm, this looks like a classic case of Plesk having many developer friendly tools that cPanel is lacking. I'd agree that Plesk will indeed be a good solution for your requirements.

  44. Hmm, DO doesn't have a support plan unless you are spending more than $500/m. I believe, you may consider getting a managed VPS (even though you may not need it) because you require system administration support which may not be included with all self managed options (but available as an addon at hourly rates).
  45. Plesk lists some of its major partners on it page such as AWS, Azure, and OVH. It should be noted that Plesk is almost twice the cost in licensing fees each month, but there are some things that Plesk does do better in my research.
  46. The biggest issue you are going to run into most cPanel partners will not offer Plesk and visa-versa due to licensing requirements of each.
  47. cPanel implementation of Git is pretty poor at this point, I will agree with you on that, but they are working on improving it with every release. Since cPanel is already adding the user to Git for you, adding additional tools probably would not take that much, you just would not have a pretty interface for them in the control panel.

  49. Compared to? cPanel is $20/mo & Plesk Unlimited domain license is $25/mo as per the retail price on their respective websites. The math doesn't validate.

  52. It seems you did not understand what I said about code deployments.
  53. I believe, you may consider getting a managed VPS
  54. I doubt I'll get a managed VPS with a decent host within my budget that's per my requirements. Still, got any recommendations/suggestions?

  56. Hmm, budget is indeed a challenge - mainly because you require Plesk Unlimited which is $25/m in itself and you are left with remaining specs (4GB RAM + 40-50GB SSD) for another $25/m which will be an ideal price for a self managed server with no system administration included. Do you have any scope of increasing your budget and/or possibly working with Plesk Web App / Web Pro editions?

  58. Most companies charge $10-15 for cPanel when purchased with a VPS. Im not saying Plesk will not be discounted as well, I just have never seen it in any of the offerings from companies that partnered with Plesk

  60. Doubtful, I've seen some big hosts offering both cPanel & Plesk - Media Temple is one of those.
  61. Do you have any scope of increasing your budget and/or possibly working with Plesk Web App / Web Pro editions?
  62. I could make do with Web Pro edition if needed. If I have to, what would be the budget needed? Not keen on spending $100/mo though.

  64. This should be more closer to your budget - You can have quite a few options around $60/m with Plesk Web Pro managed server. The toughest part is now to search / research and decide on a host that works for you. Searching here on WHT will be a good start of short listing a few of them.
