  1. It was 1963 or 4, summer,
  2. and my father was driving our family
  3. from Ft. Hood to North Carolina in our 56 Buick.
  4. We'd been hearing about Klan attacks, and we knew
  5. Mississippi to be more dangerous than usual.
  6. Dark lay hanging from the trees the way moss did,
  7. and when it moaned light against the windows
  8. that night, my father pulled off the road to sleep.
  9. Noises
  10. that usually woke me from rest afraid of monsters
  11. kept my father awake that night, too,
  12. and I lay in the quiet noticing him listen, learning
  13. that he might not be able always to protect us
  14. from everything and the creatures besides;
  15. perhaps not even from the fury suddenly loud
  16. through my body about his trip from Texas
  17. to settle us home before he would go away
  18. to a place no place in the world
  19. he named Viet Nam. A boy needs a father
  20. with him, I kept thinking, fixed against noise
  21. from the dark.
