  1. President Donald Trump’s public comments about America’s ongoing NAFTA negotiations with Canada and Mexico reveal the negotiating technique he developed as a businessman.
  2. His style is to negotiate from what he perceives as a position of strength.
  3. In order to do that, he tries to intimidate the other parties, if need be, to accept his terms and conditions.
  4. “We will end up probably terminating NAFTA at some point”, Trump said at a recent rally of his supporters in Arizona.
  5. “Personally, I don’t think we can make a deal because we have been so badly taken advantage of.”
  6. Trump delivered those frustrating words barely a week into the NAFTA talks, threatening to end the agreement if he is not happy with negotiations.
  7. It’s not hard to understand his comments were designed to create pressure on Canada and Mexico to accept his terms.
  8. Trump has used anti-NAFTA rhetoric since his presidential campaign.
