Richard Harris only played Dumbledore because his granddaughter threatened never to speak to him again!
For those who don’t know Richard Harris, he was a writer, singer, actor and director of Irish descent. Film lovers will best remember him for his role as King Arthur in the 1967 picture titled Camelot.
In the mainstream, however, he stars in Richard-Harristhe first two Harry Potter movies as Dumbledore prior to his ill-fated demise. That was the last role he ever played. Harris had once hinted that he had no interest in taking the part as a result of his failing health.
His then 11-year-old granddaughter was not happy with his sentiments and she threatened never to speak to him again if he failed to take the role, and he had no option but to heed to her demands. Richard Harris also spoke in an interview with the Toronto Star and he expressed concern that he was afraid his continued association with Harry Potter films would outshine the rest of his career.
His words: ‘Because, you see, I don’t just want to be remembered for being in those bloody films, and I’m afraid that’s what’s going to happen to me.’
