When they observed that `Ammar had been killed by Mu`awiyah's army, they became
convinced that they were on the wrong side and that Amir al-mu'minin was definitely on the
right. This agitation thus caused among the leaders as well as the rank and file of Mu`awiyah's
army, was quelled by him with the argument that it was Amir al-mu'minin who brought
