Actually I found my error here. That said the error message here is still deceptive so that should be cleaned up. The only reason I needed to fake the units system out is because quantities only recognize dimensionless indices, even when the indices really have units. I have been trying to implement an algorithm and getting stuck at a certain point where when trying to take the dot product of an array with its transpose.
You can determine your own chunking strategy using hdf5, or something like dask can figure that strategy out for you. As far as I can tell, though, none of them have anything to do with array concatenation. This suggestion has been applied or marked resolved.
