Mongar is one of the most ancient districts in Eastern Bhutan. The whole town is elevated – some living on the valleys as high as 4 kilometers up. The best textile weavers live in this district and it is one of the main businesses in the area.
The Mongar Dzong is fairly new at 86 years old but the dzong was erected without architectural plans and nails. It is a very traditional Bhutanese dzong. You also have to visit the Zhongar Dzong, the Dramitse Lhakhang and the Aja Ney. The Aja Ney is a sacred place where Bhutanese people perform their pilgrimage.
