  1. DDoS Protected VPS - Best Location/Host for Good Latency For Both USA and UK?
  2. I run a point and click style game server that doesn't require extremely low latency, for example 50-100ms is great, and even 200ms is fair. I was looking to upgrade my VPS, which is currently hosted in Montreal, Canada, but that got me thinking that maybe I should ask for some opinions on host and location before doing so.

  9. I am occassionaly hit by a DDoS attack so some protection is required. My users are split about 50/50 between USA/Canada and countries such as UK/Netherlands/Finland. I only need 2-4GM of ram, I currently only use a 1 CPU core though I was looking to move up to 2-3 cores. Pretty much $50 and under works, obviously cheaper is better.
  10. Current VPS
  11. Host: extravm.com
  12. Location: Montreal, Canada
  13. Eastern USA (my location): ~50ms
  14. Westest USA: N/A though I do have users here
  15. Finland (a user): ~150ms
  16. Latvia (another user): ~145ms

  19. Should I just stick with extravm or is there anywhere I can get better latency?
  20. Well, when it comes to upgrading you should always explore other options to find the best specs/pricing. However, if you are happy with your current provider then there is no reason to move and you can stay where you are happy.
  21. However if you do choose to explore other options you might want to just ask for a LookingGlass so you can conduct some tests on different locations to get an understanding of the ping/latency.
  22. Any Canada/USA if the server is in NA customers will have a decent connection. Issues arise or latency arises when the customers are located in EU/Asia and the server is in NA.

  26. Yeah, right now my EU latency is acceptable at 150ms to the Canadian VPS, but if there is a better location to bring the EU closer to 100ms while not bringing my current NA latency up too much higher (50ms right now but 100ms would be fine), a better balance between the two would be more ideal for my needs.

  28. Well moving to USA won't knock the latency to Europe down a lot but it will make a few ms of a difference, for some this is life and death. You will have to shop around, approach providers and ask for their LookingGlass so you can run some tests to other locations and you in East Coast USA to see for yourself.

  30. West Europe to East Coast USA is achievable in about 70-85ms RTT -- so US east coast or western europe (UK/France/Germany/NL) should suit both your userbases.

  32. Out of curiousity, why would east coast USA have better latency than Montreal? Also, any states in particular I should look into?

  35. If you want to try out the UK or US location I don't mind giving you one to test on for a bit, but our UK <> Montreal is 78ms, and UK <> US is 75ms. Both locations to Finland are around 116ms but that'll obviously vary depending on the ISP. I think you'd have better latency overall with an eastern location in North America, but you probably won't get much better anywhere since you said players are 50/50 in NA/EU. Depends on who you want to please more and if the bit of latency difference matters greatly for the type of game servers you're running. The VA, US location has extra 1GB RAM for free by asking.

  37. If you have a NY/VA IP I can trace/ping/etc to compare with, that would be enough.

  42. When you say you were getting hit with ddos attack, how large is it? Because you need to consider this.
  43. If you want good latency to both USA and Europe/UK, Dallas would be better.
  44. I'm not sure I'd agree with that. MikeA's new Virginia location will probably be about 20-30ms better than Dallas for European users -- as would NY/NJ/etc. Dallas would be better for US West Coast users -- but an East Coast location should be suitable for them anyway.

  47. Right, depending on how your network routing configuration is setup.
  48. From my tested experience with my colo provider, Dallas has good latency including West Coast.

  54. Dallas is mid USA though -- it should be higher latency to EU than east coast unless the east coast IP you're testing has seriously messed up routing.

  57. Note that I am comparing between LA and Dallas. I am not comparing EU or any other locations.
  58. Based on our test, Dallas to Germany and London is about 112ms - 129ms. Better than LA we tested.

  71. That's what I'm saying really -- UK to a US east coast (e.g. MikeA's new VA location probably; and NY/NJ/etc) is about 75-85ms. 112-130ms for a gameserver is quite high, so when targeting both EU and US gamers, east coast USA or west coast europe is preferable. Otherwise you lose some of the European or west coast usa audience.

  74. I didn't say 112ms is great but just comparing what the OP is getting as of the moment in Finland which is 150ms and is pretty high so I raised the location Dallas as it is better. If VA location is getting 75-85ms, then it is better but I am curious about other locations since the OP mentioned other locations. Canada, Los Angeles or any west, Asia and Europe? Do you or MikeA has any IP to ping to check it? PM me if both of you can't post the IP here.

  82. Finland to Dallas is 30ms higher for all networks in Dallas, btw. I tested against 5 different networks (4/5 who I use) there from Telia and Hetzner. Not a big deal, but yeah, the average latency will be higher for EU users than NA users if using Dallas compared to a location like Virginia, New York, etc.
  83. NY/NJ would most likely provide the best balance for you between America and Europe.
  84. You could see if their other locations work any better for you, or run some tests on another providers network. Your DDoS protection there should be great however as I believe it's on the OVH networks.
