  1. He that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the
  2. springs of water shall He guide them. And I will make all
  3. My mountains a way, and My highways shall be exalted....
  4. “Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth
  5. into singing, O mountains: for the Lord hath comforted His
  6. people, and will have mercy upon His afflicted. But Zion
  7. said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten
  8. me. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should
  9. not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may
  10. forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee
  11. upon the palms of My hands; thy walls are continually before
  12. Me.” Isaiah 49:8-16.
  13. The church is God’s fortress, His city of refuge, which
  14. He holds in a revolted world. Any betrayal of the church is
  15. treachery to Him who has bought mankind with the blood of
  16. His only-begotten Son. From the beginning, faithful souls
  17. have constituted the church on earth. In every age the Lord
  18. has had His watchmen, who have borne a faithful testimony
  19. to the generation in which they lived. These sentinels gave
  20. the message of warning; and when they were called to lay
  21. off their armor, others took up the work. God brought these
  22. witnesses into covenant relation with Himself, uniting the
  23. church on earth with the church in heaven. He has sent forth
  24. His angels to minister to His church, and the gates of hell
  25. have not been able to prevail against His people.
  26. Through centuries of persecution, conflict, and darkness,
  27. God has sustained His church. Not one cloud has fallen upon
  28. it that He has not prepared for; not one opposing
