Mumbai woman waiting for husband falls asleep, neighbour and friends sneak in, rape her

  1. A 27-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by her neighbour and his two friends in her house in Reay Road area last week.
  2. According to the police, the incident occurred after the woman dozed of while waiting for her husband, who works at Nal Bazaar. An officer from Byculla police station said, “The survivor’s husband works at Nal Bazaar in south Mumbai. On the day of the incident, he had to stay late at work and she was waiting for him with the main door open. She fell asleep without shutting the door.”
  3. The police said the three men sneaked into her residence and locked it from inside. They allegedly first assaulted her and then raped her.
  4. The officer added, “We have identified one of the accused as the woman’s neighbour and believe that the other two who accompanied him, were his friends.”
  5. After the men left her house, the woman’s husband returned home to find her weeping with her clothes all torn. “Her husband immediately went to the neighbour’s residence to confront him but did not find him there. The couple then came to the police station and registered a case against the three,” said an officer.
  6. As part of the hunt for the trio, a police team has been sent to Kolkata. Senior police inspector Avinash Shingte from Byculla police station said, “We have registered a case and are investigating it thoroughly. A team has been dispatched to nab the accused.”
  7. Byculla police have registered a case under sections 376 (D) (gangrape) and 452 (house trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code. The medical examination of the survivor confirmed that she was raped.
