  3. EDICT OF WORMS
  4. And that all may see for themselves that just such is
  5. unquestionably the meaning of that action taken, let us consider
  6. directly the facts, documents, and dates, in which rests the
  7. unquestionable truth of the case.
  8. In 1521 the Diet of Worms condemned Luther and the
  9. Reformation. There immediately followed, the "Edict of Worms"
  10. that is the key to the Protest in which originated
  11. 2
  12. the word "Protestant." This Edict was issued by the Emperor
  13. Charles V. "the ablest and most powerful monarch of the sixteenth
  14. century." After denouncing Luther personally in sweeping terms,
  15. the imperial edict says:
  16. "We have therefore sent this Luther from before our face,
  17. that all pious and sensible men may regard him as a fool, or a
  18. man possessed of the devil; and we expect that after the expiry
  19. of his safe-conduct, effectual means will be taken
