  1. TEASER
  2. INT. POOL HALL - NIGHT
  3. Mal and Jayne are playing pool with a guy named Wright, while Inara sits at the bar and sips a dainty pink drink.
  4. WRIGHT
  5. Didn't hardly have to convert the ship even.
  6. Six in the corner. Stronger locks, thicker doors,
  7. keep everybody where they're supposed to be.
  8. Don't even need more rations.
  9. Pool balls on table waver and nearly disappear, like a holographic image shorting out.
  10. WRIGHT
  11. (in Chinese)
  12. [Way! - "Hey!"]
  13. A bar worker motions to the wall.
  14. Cut to a shot of a sign on the wall "MANAGEMENT NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BALL FAILURE".
  15. JAYNE
  16. You made money, huh?
  17. WRIGHT
  18. Hand over fist, my friend. Water planets need labor,
  19. terraforming crews got a prodigious death rate.
  20. MAL
  21. Labor, you mean, uh ... slaves.
  22. WRIGHT
  23. Well it wasn't volunteers, for damn sure.
  24. MAL
  25. That why you didn't have to lay in more rations?
  26. WRIGHT
  27. I didn't hear no complaints.
  28. JAYNE
  29. How much money, lots?
  30. Mal walks over to Inara, who's been watching the game from the bar.
  31. MAL
  32. There's a chance you might want to head
  33. back to the ship.
  34. INARA
  35. Oh, I'm all right. This is entertaining, actually.
  36. MAL
  37. Yeah? What's entertaining?
  38. INARA
  39. I like watching the game. As with other situations,
  40. the key seems to be giving Jayne a heavy stick and
  41. standing back.
  42. MAL
  43. Still, might ought to clear out before too much
  44. longer. Seems there's a thief about.
  45. INARA
  46. A thief?
  47. MAL
  48. Took this right off him.
  49. (Mal hands Inara a wad of cash.)
  50. Now they earned that with the sweat of their
  51. slave-trading brows.
  52. INARA
  53. (hushed and a bit shocked)
  54. Mal...
  55. Inara shoves the cash into her bra.
  56. MAL
  57. Aw, terrible shame. Course they won't discover
  58. it till they go order their next round of drinks.
  59. Hand comes from behind and grabs Mal's shoulder.
  60. WRIGHT
  61. (in Chinese)
  62. [Way! - "Hey!"]
  63. MAL
  64. Good drinker, that one.
  65. Mal turns and slugs the grabber square in the jaw. Raucous bar fight ensues, Mal and Jayne basically kicking ass, while Inara stays out of the way and looks on. Bad guys down, if not beaten, Mal takes Inara's arm and hustles her out.
  66. INARA
  67. Lovely place, I'll tell my friends.
  68. END OF TEASER
  69. ACT ONE
  70. INT. SERENTIY - BRIDGE
  71. Wash is piloting the ship while Zoe looks out the front port.
  72. WASH
  73. Seem to you we cleared out of Santo in a hurry?
  74. ZOE
  75. Seems we do that a lot. Heard tell though,
  76. we're going to stay a while on Persephone.
  77. WASH
  78. Shiny.
  79. ZOE
  80. Yeah? Thought you'd get land crazy that long
  81. in port.
  82. WASH
  83. Probably, but I've been sane a long while now,
  84. and change is good.
  85. Mal enters the bridge.
  86. MAL
  87. Well, ain't that a joyful sight?
  88. WASH
  89. Gotta love a sunset.
  90. ZOE
  91. Starting to get familiar too, like a second home.
  92. MAL
  93. Persephone ain't home. Too many people we got to
  94. avoid. Re-supply, look for work, move along.
  95. Sniff the air, we don't kiss the dirt.
  96. ZOE
  97. Wasn't planning on the dirt-kissing, sir.
  98. WASH
  99. Besides, I wouldn't stand for it anyway,
  100. Captain, jealous man like me.
  101. (re: alarm sounding from the console)
  102. Closing in.
  103. ZOE
  104. Planet's coming up a mite fast.
  105. WASH
  106. That's just cause, I'm going down too quick.
  107. Likely crash and kill us all.
  108. MAL
  109. Well, that happens, let me know.
  110. Mal walks off the bridge.
  111. WASH
  112. (maybe a tad nervous)
  113. Okay. Whoa. No, we're good, we're good. It's okay.
  114. INT. - INARA'S SHUTTLE
  115. Cut to a computer screen with several faces displayed. Inara deletes a few faces, and then selects one which enlarges and begins speaking. The face belongs to a well-dressed but awkward young man.
  116. YOUNGER HOPEFUL
  117. I understand your time on our planet is limited,
  118. and if you've selected my proposal to hear, then
  119. the honor you do me flatters.... my honor....and I
  120. hope that...
  121. Inara cuts off the recitation and selects another face. While the previous young man's speech seemed pre-recorded, this is clearly a live transmission.
  122. ATHERTON
  123. Now there's the smile made of sunlight.
  124. INARA
  125. Atherton, how wonderful to see you.
  126. ATHERTON
  127. Did you get my message? I was extra appealing.
  128. INARA
  129. What a flattering invitation. I had no idea I was
  130. arriving in time for the social event of the season.
  131. ATHERTON
  132. So, you'll accompany me? I ask, heart in my throat.
  133. There's a certain offer I'm still waiting to hear about.
  134. Off-screen knocking at the door.
  135. INARA
  136. Yes, I imagine there is. I'm delighted to say I'll
  137. be there. Now, I'm sorry Atherton, but I have to run.
  138. ATHERTON
  139. No, please, I understand. I'll see you soon,
  140. [bao bay - "sweetheart"].
  141. Mal enters Inara's shuttle.
  142. INARA
  143. Good afternoon, Captain.
  144. MAL
  145. Morning. We're downing, and in case that Wash don't
  146. kill us all, local time's going to be in the a.m.,
  147. 10 or so.
  148. INARA
  149. Yes, I saw that.
  150. MAL
  151. (looking over Inara's shoulder, which still
  152. shows the face of Atherton)
  153. Making plans? "Atherton Wing". He's a regular, ain't he?
  154. Inara covers the computer screen with a handy drapery.
  155. INARA
  156. I've seen him before.
  157. MAL
  158. Oh, I never did. Not what I pictured - young. Must
  159. be rich too, to afford your rates.
  160. INARA
  161. I suppose. He has engaged me for several days.
  162. MAL
  163. Days!? Boy must have stamina.
  164. INARA
  165. He does.
  166. MAL
  167. Well...fine. Is he letting you out at all?
  168. INARA
  169. Actually, we're attending a ball tomorrow night.
  170. MAL
  171. Tell me, do all the men there pay for their dates,
  172. or just the young rich ones with stamina?
  173. INARA
  174. Most of the women in there will not be Companions,
  175. if that's what you're asking. Perhaps the other
  176. men couldn't attract one.
  177. MAL
  178. Hmm. It's sounds like the finest party I can
  179. imagine getting paid to go to.
  180. INARA
  181. I don't suppose you'd find it up to standards
  182. of your outings. More conversation and somewhat
  183. less petty theft and getting hit with pool cues.
  184. I understand if you need to go prepare for that
  185. "It's 10 in the morning" issue.
  186. MAL
  187. Yeah. Better go do that. 'Cause I think this
  188. is more of an evening look.
  189. EXT. PERSEPHONE MOON - BUSY STREET SCENE - DAY
  190. Kaylee, Zoe, Wash, Mal and Jayne are walking through a street, carrying luggage. Kaylee spies a shop window and moves in for a closer look. The others follow.
  191. KAYLEE
  192. Oh, look at the pretties!
  193. WASH
  194. What am I looking at, the girls or the clothes?
  195. JAYNE
  196. There's clothes?
  197. ZOE
  198. The clothes, please.
  199. KAYLEE
  200. (indicating a pink frilly dress, something out
  201. of Gone With the Wind)
  202. Say, look at the fluffy one.
  203. ZOE
  204. Too much foofaraw. If I'm going to wear a dress,
  205. I'd want something with some slink.
  206. WASH
  207. (eagerly)
  208. You want a slinky dress? I can buy you a slinky
  209. dress. Captain, can I have money for a slinky dress?
  210. JAYNE
  211. I'll chip in.
  212. ZOE
  213. (to Jayne)
  214. I can hurt you.
  215. KAYLEE
  216. The only place I seen somethin' so nice is
  217. some of the things Inara has.
  218. MAL
  219. Well, we best be movin'.
  220. ZOE
  221. (to Kaylee)
  222. I guess she needs all that stuff, the life she leads.
  223. KAYLEE
  224. Well, sure. Sometimes the customers buy
  225. her things. Some real rich men.
  226. MAL
  227. Come on! These ain't feathers I'm toting
  228. here, ya know?
  229. KAYLEE
  230. I like the ruffles. Inara gets to wear whatever
  231. she wants.
  232. MAL
  233. What are you going to do in that rig? Flounce
  234. around the engine room? Be like a sheep walking
  235. on its hind legs.
  236. Kaylee walks off, obviously hurt. Zoe gives Mal a glare.
  237. ZOE
  238. See ya on the ship, Captain.
  239. Mal looks disgusted with himself.
  240. Zoe, Wash and Kaylee board a quad-runner type thing and leave.
  241. JAYNE
  242. (to Mal)
  243. Is she mad or something?
  244. Off screen sound of gun cocking. Mal turns to see a dread-locked man holding a rifle on him. We see at least one more thug with a rifle at the ready. A small man in a derby approaches from the side.
  245. MAL
  246. Badger.
  247. BADGER
  248. (noticeable cockney accent)
  249. Captain Reynolds. Heard you was in town. Thought
  250. we might have a bit of a sit-down.
  251. MAL
  252. Prefer a bit of a piss-off.
  253. BADGER
  254. I'm very sorry. Did I give you the impression
  255. I was asking?
  256. INT. - BADGER'S OFFICE - DAY
  257. Jayne, Mal and Badger are seated around what is possibly a crate, passing for a table.
  258. MAL
  259. Seems the last time there was a chance for a little
  260. palaver we were all manner of unwelcome.
  261. JAYNE
  262. (sipping from a chipped tea cup)
  263. This ain't bad.
  264. BADGER
  265. There's a trick to it: wood-alcohol.
  266. MAL
  267. Now we're favored guests... treated to the finest
  268. in beverages that make you blind. So what is it
  269. you need?
  270. JAYNE
  271. (mouth full as he reaches for more sandwiches
  272. that are laid out on the table)
  273. Mmm, 'scuse me.
  274. BADGER
  275. There's a local, but the name of Warrick Harrow.
  276. Got some property he wants to sell off-planet...
  277. fetch a high price.
  278. MAL
  279. The local powers won't let him sell off-world.
  280. BADGER
  281. It's a conundrum. What my man Harrow needs himself
  282. is a smuggler. Willing to cut you in on it.
  283. MAL
  284. Why me? You have access to ships. You could do
  285. it yourself.
  286. BADGER
  287. He won't deal with me direct. He's taken an
  288. irrational dislike.
  289. JAYNE
  290. What happened? He see your face?
  291. BADGER
  292. He's a quality gent. Nose in the air like he never
  293. [wun gwo pee - "smelled a fart"]. Don't find me
  294. respectable. But you, now I figure you got a chance.
  295. MAL
  296. You backed out of a deal last time. Left us hanging.
  297. JAYNE
  298. Hurt our feelings.
  299. MAL
  300. You recall why that took place?
  301. BADGER
  302. Had a problem with your attitude is why.
  303. Felt you was... what's the word?
  304. JAYNE
  305. Pretentious?
  306. Mal looks at Jayne as if he's surprised to learn Jayne knows a word with that many syllables.
  307. BADGER
  308. Exactly! You think you're better than other people.
  309. MAL
  310. Just the ones I'm better than. And that very quality
  311. is the one I think you're placing value on today.
  312. BADGER
  313. I'm placing value on the fact that stick up your
  314. [pee goo - "bottom"] is about as large as the one Harrow's got.
  315. MAL
  316. How would you set up a meet, man that won't
  317. deal with you?
  318. BADGER
  319. I know a place he'll be. Safe place. Using some
  320. new-tech gun scans. High-class too. Wouldn't let me
  321. in there. You might slip in. Course you couldn't buy
  322. an invite with a diamond the size of a testicle, but I
  323. got my hands on a couple.
  324. Mal and Jayne glance at each other, snickering like little boys.
  325. BADGER
  326. Of invites! You want this meeting or not?
  327. INT. - GRAND BALLROOM ENTRANCE WAY - NIGHT
  328. There is a porter announcing guests as they arrive.
  329. PORTER
  330. Colonel Cyrus Momsen, and escort.
  331. (beat)
  332. William and Lady Cortland.
  333. A translucent grid appears, Cortland hands over a small handgun to a waiting security guard.
  334. PORTER
  335. Atherton Wing, and Inara Serra.
  336. Inara and Atherton enter the ballroom, with is terribly genteel and stylish, people are dancing in a very courtly fashion.
  337. INARA
  338. (to a woman standing off to one side)
  339. Roberta, its been too long.
  340. (to an older man seated and sipping a glass
  341. of red wine, in Chinese)
  342. [Lao pung yo, nee can chi lai hun yo jing shen. -
  343. "You're looking wonderful, old friend."]
  344. ATHERTON
  345. Half the men in this room wish you were on their
  346. arm, tonight.
  347. INARA
  348. Only half? I must be losing my indefinable allure.
  349. ATHERTON
  350. Oh, its not that indefinable.
  351. (quietly)
  352. All of them wish they were in your bed.
  353. INARA
  354. (seems a bit put off by that remark)
  355. I'm looking for the boy with the shimmerwine.
  356. ATHERTON
  357. Oh, she blushes. Not many in your line of work do
  358. that. You are a very singular woman. And I find....
  359. I find I admire you more and more.
  360. INT. SERENITY - ENGINE ROOM
  361. Kaylee is working on something mechanical. Mal enters.
  362. MAL
  363. Kaylee? Kaylee!
  364. KAYLEE
  365. I'm not speaking to you, Captain.
  366. MAL
  367. Got no need to speak. Come on. Got a job for you.
  368. Kaylee mutters under her breath.
  369. INT. - GRAND BALLROOM - NIGHT
  370. Atherton and Inara are dancing together.
  371. ATHERTON
  372. I'm trying to offer you something you know. A life.
  373. INARA
  374. Atherton...
  375. ATHERTON
  376. You can live here on Persephone, as my personal companion.
  377. INARA
  378. You are a generous man.
  379. ATHERTON
  380. That is not a "yes".
  381. INARA
  382. It's not a "no", either.
  383. (to a woman dancing nearby)
  384. You look gorgeous, dear.
  385. ATHERTON
  386. You belong here, Inara, not on that flying piece
  387. of [gos se. - "crap."] You see that, don't you?
  388. INARA
  389. Atherton, language.
  390. ATHERTON
  391. What? Piece of [gos se? - "crap?"]
  392. But it is a piece of [gos se. - "crap."]
  393. PORTER
  394. Miss Kaywinnit Lee Frye and escort.
  395. INARA
  396. (turns and looks toward the entrance)
  397. Kaylee?
  398. Mal and Kaylee enter the ballroom, Kaylee looking radiant in the ruffly pink hoop skirted dress she was admiring in the shop window.
  399. INARA
  400. Oh, [gos se. - "crap."]
  401. END ACT ONE
  402. ACT TWO
  403. INT. GRAND BALLROOM - NIGHT
  404. Right back where we left off, with Kaylee and Mal wandering farther into the ballroom.
  405. MAL
  406. Does.. um.. does this seem kind of tight?
  407. KAYLEE
  408. Shows off your backside. Did you see the
  409. chandelier? It's hovering!
  410. MAL
  411. What's the point of that, I wonder?
  412. KAYLEE
  413. Oh! Mangoes!
  414. MAL
  415. I mean, I see how they did it. I just ain't
  416. getting the why.
  417. KAYLEE
  418. These girls have the most beautiful dresses.
  419. And so do I -- how about that?
  420. MAL
  421. Yeah, well, just be careful. We cheated Badger out
  422. of good money to buy that frippery, and you're supposed
  423. to make me look respectable.
  424. KAYLEE
  425. Yes, sir, Captain Tightpants.
  426. MAL
  427. Ok, I'm looking for our guy Harrow.
  428. KAYLEE
  429. And Inara. We should look for Inara, right?
  430. Just to say halloo at her.
  431. MAL
  432. If we see her. I think she's wearing gold. Okay,
  433. help me find our man. He's supposed to be old, kinda
  434. stocky, wears a red sash crossways.
  435. KAYLEE
  436. Why does he do that?
  437. MAL
  438. Maybe he won the Miss Persephone Pageant.
  439. Just help me look.
  440. KAYLEE
  441. Is that him?
  442. MAL
  443. That's the buffet table.
  444. KAYLEE
  445. Well how can we be sure, unless we question it?
  446. MAL
  447. Fine. Don't make yourself sick.
  448. KAYLEE
  449. Oh, [sheh-sheh - "thank you"], Captain.
  450. INT. SERENITY - COMMON AREA
  451. Jayne, Simon and Book are playing cards. River is skulking around in the background. The boys have scraps of paper instead of chips. They seem to be playing for ship-board chores.
  452. SIMON
  453. (dealing)
  454. Ante up, gentlemen. Dishes.
  455. BOOK
  456. Dishes. Could do with less of them.
  457. JAYNE
  458. Garbage.
  459. SIMON
  460. (turns over a card)
  461. Tall card... plum. Plums are tall.
  462. BOOK
  463. I'll take... two.
  464. SIMON
  465. Two. No tall card claim.
  466. JAYNE
  467. Speaking of garbage, I'll take three.
  468. SIMON
  469. Three. Dealer forced to claim the tall.
  470. In the background, River is muttering over cans of food, getting increasingly more agitated.
  471. BOOK
  472. What do you supposed the Captain and Kaylee are
  473. doing now? Septic vat.
  474. JAYNE
  475. Eating steaks off of plates made of solid money,
  476. like as anything. I fold.
  477. River is now ripping the labels from several cans of food.
  478. SIMON
  479. Me too. Tall card's around my neck like a weight.
  480. Take it Shepherd.
  481. BOOK
  482. That's a nice pile of things I don't have to do.
  483. RIVER
  484. (still attacking the food packages)
  485. These are the ones that take you. They're the ones
  486. reaching and doing. They're the ones...
  487. The three at the table finally notice River. Book and Simon move to her side.
  488. SIMON
  489. River.
  490. BOOK
  491. Is she hurt?
  492. JAYNE
  493. You better see to her. Bad habit for a fugitive.
  494. She's going to do that in public and get herself
  495. hauled off.
  496. As Jayne is saying this, he is re-arranging the scraps of paper that represent winnings in the card game, while Simon and Book are busy tending to freaking-out River.
  497. RIVER
  498. ...everywhere... and the hands go everywhere...
  499. SIMON
  500. (gently restraining her)
  501. Shhh, its ok.
  502. RIVER
  503. ...when you brush your teeth and...
  504. BOOK
  505. It's ok, she didn't harm much.
  506. RIVER
  507. ...and nobody said anything....
  508. BOOK
  509. We'll have a few mystery meals.
  510. SIMON
  511. It's ok. Shh shh shh shh.
  512. RIVER
  513. (calmer now)
  514. ...and then they come.
  515. JAYNE
  516. So we gonna play cards, or screw around?
  517. INT. SERENITY - ZOE AND WASH'S PERSONAL QUARTERS
  518. Cut to a long, lovely shot, traveling up Zoe's naked leg. Zoe and Wash are in bed, obviously in the throes of post-coital bliss. Both are breathless. The atmosphere is comfortable and happy. These people are deeply in love with one another.
  519. ZOE
  520. I thought you wanted to spend more time off-ship
  521. this visit.
  522. WASH
  523. Out there is seems like its all fancy parties.
  524. I like our party better. The dress code is easier
  525. and I know all the steps.
  526. ZOE
  527. (happy and sleepy)
  528. I'd say you do at that.
  529. WASH
  530. Don't fall asleep now. Sleepiness is weakness of
  531. character. Ask anyone. You're acting captain.
  532. Know what happens you fall asleep now?
  533. ZOE
  534. Jayne slits my throat and takes over.
  535. WASH
  536. That's right.
  537. ZOE
  538. And we can't stop it.
  539. WASH
  540. Well, I wash my hands of it. It's a hopeless case.
  541. I'll read a nice poem at the funeral. Something
  542. with imagery.
  543. ZOE
  544. You could lock the door and keep the power-hungry
  545. maniac at bay.
  546. WASH
  547. Oh, no, I'm starting to like this poetry idea now.
  548. (dramatically)
  549. "Here lies my beloved Zoe, my autumn flower, somewhat
  550. less attractive now she's all corpsified and gross..."
  551. Zoe ends this eulogy with a pillow to Wash's face.
  552. INT. GRAND BALLROOM - PROBABLY NIGHT
  553. KAYLEE
  554. (watching the dancing, to a young gentleman
  555. standing on the edge of the dance floor)
  556. Aren't they something. They're like butterflies,
  557. or little pieces of wrapping paper blowing around.
  558. The young gentleman bows and walks off, leaving Kaylee. She looks a little sad, bur rallies and walks over to a group of women.
  559. KAYLEE
  560. Hello.
  561. BANNING
  562. I don't.. um... have we been introduced?
  563. KAYLEE
  564. (shaking hands with first woman)
  565. Oh, I'm Kaylee.
  566. BANNING
  567. Banning. And this is Destra, Cabott and Zelle.
  568. KAYLEE
  569. (gushing)
  570. Don't you just love this party? Everything's so
  571. fancy, and there's some kind of hot cheese over there.
  572. CABOTT
  573. It's not as good as last year.
  574. KAYLEE
  575. Oh really? What'd they have last year?
  576. CABOTT
  577. Standards.
  578. Kaylee looks crestfallen.
  579. BANNING
  580. Who made your dress, Kaylee?
  581. KAYLEE
  582. Oh, do you like it? When I saw the ruffles,
  583. I just couldn't resist.
  584. BANNING
  585. You ought to see to your girl.
  586. KAYLEE
  587. [Shah muh? - "What?"]
  588. BANNING
  589. Your girl. She's not very good. She made you a
  590. dress that looks like you bought it in a store.
  591. KAYLEE
  592. Oh, I didn't know.
  593. An older gentleman has obviously overheard this exchange, and walks to Kaylee's side.
  594. MURPHY
  595. Why Banning Miller. What a vision you are in your
  596. fine dress. It must have taken a dozen slaves a
  597. dozen days to get you into that getup.
  598. (Banning preens)
  599. 'Course your daddy tells me it takes the space of
  600. a schoolboy's wink to get you out of it again.
  601. Banning gets huffy and stalks off, followed by the other women. Kaylee looks surprised and delighted.
  602. MURPHY
  603. Forgive my rudeness. I cannot abide useless people.
  604. Cut to Mal, as he spies his quarry. He crosses over to Harrow.
  605. HARROW
  606. (to someone offscreen)
  607. Oh, no, thank you very much.
  608. MAL
  609. Beg pardon, but would you be Warrick Harrow?
  610. HARROW
  611. Sir Warrick Harrow. The sash.
  612. MAL
  613. The sash.
  614. HARROW
  615. It indicates lordship.
  616. MAL
  617. And it's... it's doing a great job.
  618. Harrow sighs and moves away.
  619. MAL
  620. Sir, my name is Malcolm Reynolds. I captain a ship,
  621. name of Serenity. I mention this because I've been led
  622. to believe you want to move some property off-world.
  623. (tto see Inara dancing with Atherton,
  624. then turns back to Harrow)
  625. Some property you want to move off-world discreetly.
  626. HARROW
  627. You're mistaken sir. I'm an honest man.
  628. MAL
  629. It seems to me there's nothing dishonest to getting
  630. your goods to people what need them.
  631. HARROW
  632. Whom do you represent?
  633. MAL
  634. "Represent" isn't exactly the...
  635. HARROW
  636. Don't waste my time.
  637. MAL
  638. Fellow called Badger.
  639. HARROW
  640. I know him. And I think he's a psychotic low-life.
  641. MAL
  642. And I think calling him that is an insult to the
  643. psychotic low-life community. But the deal is solid.
  644. Atherton and Inara walk up.
  645. ATHERTON
  646. Sorry to interrupt, Sir Warrick, I know you from
  647. the club, I believe.
  648. INARA
  649. Captain, this is Atherton Wing, Atherton, this is
  650. Captain Mal Reynolds.
  651. MAL
  652. Pleased to meet ya. Inara, I didn't realize you
  653. were going to this party.
  654. INARA
  655. It's the only party.
  656. MAL
  657. And I can see why. How about that floating chandelier?
  658. (to Atherton)
  659. Almost outshines our girl here.
  660. Mal notices the possessive and overly rough grip Atherton has on Inara's upper arm.
  661. MAL
  662. Ath? Can I call you Ath? Inara has spoken of you
  663. to me. She made a point of mentioning your generosity.
  664. Given that, I'm sure you won't mind if I ask Inara the
  665. favor of a dance?
  666. ATHERTON
  667. (not happy)
  668. Of course.
  669. Inara and Mal walk off.
  670. HARROW
  671. (to Atherton)
  672. You're a brave man.
  673. ATHERTON
  674. I know what's mine.
  675. Mal leads Inara to the dance floor.
  676. MAL
  677. This dance I think I actually know.
  678. INARA
  679. Why are you here?
  680. MAL
  681. Business. Same as you. I was talking to a contact
  682. about a smuggling job and you came over to me.
  683. INARA
  684. You were staring at me.
  685. MAL
  686. I saw you is all. You stand out.
  687. INARA
  688. In this company, Captain, I believe you're the
  689. one who stands out.
  690. MAL
  691. Well then, maybe I just wanted to see a professional
  692. at work. Is this the hardest part, would you say,
  693. or does that come later?
  694. INARA
  695. You have no call to try to make me ashamed of my job.
  696. What I do is legal. And how's that smuggling coming?
  697. MAL
  698. My work's illegal, but at least it's honest.
  699. INARA
  700. What!?
  701. MAL
  702. Well this, the lie of it. That man parading you around
  703. on his arm as if he actually won you, as if he loves you,
  704. and everyone here actually going along with it.
  705. INARA
  706. These people like me and I like them. I like Atherton
  707. too by the way.
  708. MAL
  709. Well sure, what's not to like. I'm liable to sleep
  710. with him myself.
  711. INARA
  712. And he likes me, whether you see it or not. He's made
  713. me an offer. You may think he doesn't honor me, but he
  714. wants me to live here. I'd be his personal companion.
  715. I could belong here. Call me pretentious but there is
  716. some appeal in that.
  717. MAL
  718. You're right. Got no call to stop you. You've got
  719. the right to a decent life.
  720. INARA
  721. I see Kaylee's here.
  722. MAL
  723. Yeah, crying Cinderella tears. You should have seen
  724. her when I told he she could have that layer cake
  725. she's wearing.
  726. INARA
  727. I think she looks adorable.
  728. MAL
  729. Yeah, but I never said it.
  730. Cut to scene of Kaylee, holding court with a group of mostly older men, including her rescuer.
  731. KAYLEE
  732. I'm not saying the 80-04's hard to repair, it
  733. just ain't worth it.
  734. OLDER FARMER
  735. It's a fine machine, you just keep it tuned.
  736. KAYLEE
  737. [Tsai boo shr. - "No way."] The extenders ain't braced.
  738. MURPHY
  739. I've been telling him to buy the 80-10 for years.
  740. KAYLEE
  741. Those 'tenders snap off, don't matter how good
  742. the engine's cycling.
  743. YOUNGER FARMER
  744. Miss Kaylee, I wonder if I could request the honor of....
  745. MURPHY
  746. (interrupting)
  747. Wait a minute. Let her talk. She's talking.
  748. Dance later.
  749. KAYLEE
  750. By the way, the 80-10's the same machine, they just
  751. changed the plating and hope no one noticed.
  752. The men laugh, obviously charmed by Kaylee.
  753. Cut back to Mal and Inara dancing, while Atherton looks on with a glare. Mal missteps the dance, and Inara and Mal both chuckle.
  754. MAL
  755. It's possible you were right, and this ain't my
  756. kind of party.
  757. They are comfortable with each other, laughing and smiling. Atherton barges in and roughly grabs Inara's arm and pulls her away from the dance floor.
  758. MAL
  759. Whoa now. Watch yourself. Ain't no need for hands on.
  760. ATHERTON
  761. Excuse me, she's not here with you, Captain. She's mine.
  762. MAL
  763. Yours? She don't belong to nobody.
  764. ATHERTON
  765. Money changed hands, which makes her mine tonight.
  766. And no matter how you dress her up she's still...
  767. Mal hauls off and slugs him before he can get the rest of the sentence out.
  768. MAL
  769. (to Inara)
  770. Turns out this is my kind of party.
  771. INARA
  772. Oh, Mal.
  773. MAL
  774. What? Man was out of line.
  775. ATHERTON
  776. (recovering, angry)
  777. I accept.
  778. MAL
  779. That's great. What?
  780. GENTLEMAN
  781. There has been a challenge.
  782. ATHERTON
  783. I hope you're prepared, Captain.
  784. MAL
  785. What? You all talking about a fight? That's fine.
  786. (taking off his jacket)
  787. Let's get out of here.
  788. INARA
  789. It's not a fist fight, Mal.
  790. GENTLEMAN
  791. The duel will be met tomorrow morning at Cadrie Pond.
  792. MAL
  793. Well, why wait? Where's that guard? He collected
  794. a whole mess of pistols.
  795. GENTLEMAN
  796. If you require it, any gentleman here can give you
  797. use of a sword.
  798. MAL
  799. Use of a swo... what?
  800. END OF ACT TWO
  801. ACT THREE
  802. INT. GRAND BALLROOM - NIGHT
  803. Back where we left off, Mal in hot water:
  804. KAYLEE
  805. What's going on?
  806. MAL
  807. I'm not rightly sure. What's going on?
  808. HARROW
  809. First off, you'll be put up in lodgings for the night,
  810. so you don't disappear. I wouldn't blame you,
  811. incidentally. Wing may be a spoiled dandy, but he's
  812. an expert swordsman. He's killed a dozen men with a
  813. longblade. You're the only one gave him a reason.
  814. MAL
  815. (exasperated)
  816. Oh this is a joke.
  817. INARA
  818. He'll need a second.
  819. MAL
  820. What's that?
  821. HARROW
  822. I'll take on the job.
  823. INARA
  824. He fights if you refuse.
  825. ATHERTON
  826. (moving towards the entranceway)
  827. Inara, come with me, please.
  828. MAL
  829. (to Harrow)
  830. You taking on this job... being my second...
  831. does this mean we're in business?
  832. HARROW
  833. It means you're in mortal danger. But you mussed
  834. up Atherton's face, and that has endeared you to me
  835. somewhat. You might even give him a fight, before
  836. he guts you.
  837. ATHERTON
  838. (sharply)
  839. Inara!
  840. (holds out his arm to Inara)
  841. KAYLEE
  842. Up until the punching, it was a real nice party.
  843. INT. SERENITY - CARGO HOLD
  844. Jayne is doing pull-ups from straps attached to the overhead walkway. There is a banging noise, like someone knocking on a metal door. Jayne stops, picks up a rifle, and looks out the small window of a door. Sighs, and opens the door to admit Badger.
  845. BADGER
  846. The captain's gone and gotten himself in trouble.
  847. A short time later, the crew has assembled in the cargo hold. Only Jayne and River are missing.
  848. BOOK
  849. A duel?
  850. WASH
  851. With swords?
  852. SIMON
  853. Captain's a good fighter, he must know how to
  854. handle a sword.
  855. ZOE
  856. I think he knows which end to hold.
  857. SIMON
  858. All right, so we just need to figure out how
  859. to get him out of there.
  860. BOOK
  861. (to Badger)
  862. We have until the morning, correct? Do you know
  863. what lodging he's in?
  864. BADGER
  865. This is embarrassing. Some of you seem to be
  866. misapprehending my purpose in being here.
  867. ZOE
  868. You're here to make sure that we don't do what
  869. these men are keen on doing.
  870. BADGER
  871. Penny for the smart lady. Persephone's my home.
  872. I got to do business with the people here. I don't
  873. want it known I brought someone in caused this kind
  874. of ruckus. We'll just settle in, till this blows over,
  875. one way or the other.
  876. Off-camera sound of rifle being cocked. Heads turn to look up onto the overhead walkway. Jayne holds his rifle on Badger. Zoe smiles.
  877. ZOE
  878. Jayne, I wouldn't.
  879. JAYNE
  880. Why not?
  881. Zoe indicates to where Badger's thugs have just come in with Kaylee. She's still in her party dress, and looks unhappy.
  882. KAYLEE
  883. Hi.
  884. INT. LARGE MANSION - NIGHT
  885. Inara is walking through the halls. She affixes a glowy door-handle sort of thing to one of the many doors, and walks in to find Mal practicing with a sword.
  886. INARA
  887. Mal?
  888. MAL
  889. (startled and swinging his sword into a pillar,
  890. where it lodges)
  891. Whoa! What are you doing here?
  892. INARA
  893. Atherton's a heavy sleeper the night before a
  894. big day. He's got that killing in the morning,
  895. and a haircut later.
  896. MAL
  897. Such a comfort, having friends visit at a time
  898. like this.
  899. INARA
  900. I knew the accommodations would be nice.
  901. Atherton doesn't skimp.
  902. Mal pulls the sword from the pillar.
  903. MAL
  904. I don't suppose I like being kept by him as much as
  905. others do. So, how come you're still attached to him?
  906. INARA
  907. Because it's my decision, not yours.
  908. MAL
  909. I thought he made it pretty clear he has no regard for you.
  910. INARA
  911. You did manage to push him into saying something, yes.
  912. Made a nice justification for the punch.
  913. MAL
  914. Well, he insulted you. I hit him. Seemed like the
  915. thing to do. Why'd this get so complicated?
  916. INARA
  917. Well, it's about to get simpler. There's a back door.
  918. Desk clerk is on alert. He'll let us out.
  919. MAL
  920. Whoa, whoa, I'm not running off. I don't know what you
  921. got in your head, but I didn't do this to prove some kind
  922. of point to you. I thought I was defending your honor.
  923. And I never back down from a fight.
  924. INARA
  925. Yes, you do! You do all the time!
  926. MAL
  927. Well, yeah... but, I'm not backing down from this one.
  928. INARA
  929. He's an expert swordsman, Mal. You had trouble with
  930. the pillar. How will your death help my honor?
  931. MAL
  932. Well, see, I plan on having it be his death. That's
  933. why I need lessons. I figure you know how, being such
  934. an educated woman, and all.
  935. (tosses a sword to Inara)
  936. INT. SERENITY - CARGO HOLD
  937. Most of the crew is gathered playing cards. All speak quietly. Badger and his henchman are standing about, mostly doing nothing but looking vaguely threatening. Badger is busy slicing up and eating an apple.
  938. KAYLEE
  939. He said not to do anything. He'll join us after
  940. he wins the duel.
  941. ZOE
  942. It doesn't hurt to have a contingency plan, Kaylee.
  943. SIMON
  944. I'm thinking, since we're unarmed, we should take
  945. them by surprise.
  946. ZOE
  947. Not necessarily. We can lure one or two of them away.
  948. Say infirmary? Take 'em out, be on Badger before he
  949. knows what happens.
  950. JAYNE
  951. Only if his attention's elsewhere. What we need's a
  952. diversion. I say Zoe gets nekkid.
  953. WASH
  954. (sitting on the floor, head on knees)
  955. Nope.
  956. JAYNE
  957. I could get nekkid.
  958. ALL
  959. No!
  960. Book has been standing off to one side during this exchange, reading the Bible. He notices that River has come quietly into the room, and moves to Simon's side and lays a hand on his shoulder. Our crew realizes she's there, and senses that this could be trouble. Simon moves to her. Badger seems not to notice.
  961. SIMON
  962. (whispering)
  963. River, you can't be here.
  964. RIVER
  965. (laughing and trying to push by Simon)
  966. There are tiny...
  967. SIMON
  968. River, please.
  969. RIVER
  970. Pull!
  971. BADGER
  972. (finally noticing River)
  973. Who's that then? Here, look at me. What's your story, love?
  974. SIMON
  975. She's ... just a... just a passenger.
  976. BADGER
  977. Yeah? Why ain't she talking? She got a secret?
  978. RIVER
  979. (with Badger's accent)
  980. Sure, I got a secret. More than one. Don't seem
  981. likely I'd tell 'em to you now, do it? Anyone off
  982. Dyton Colony knows better than to talk to strangers.
  983. (notices a shiny pin in the shape of a bird on
  984. Badger's lapel, nearly touches it, then runs a
  985. finger down his lapel before pulling back)
  986. You're talking loud enough for the both of us though,
  987. ain'tcha? I've known a dozen like you. Skipped off
  988. home early, running graft jobs here and there. Spent
  989. some time in the lock down, but less than you claim.
  990. And you're what? Petty thief with delusions of standing?
  991. Sad, little king of a sad, little hill.
  992. The crew exchanges glances, bemused. Who knew she could pull this off?
  993. BADGER
  994. Nice to see someone from the old homestead.
  995. RIVER
  996. Not really.
  997. (to Simon)
  998. Call me if anyone interesting shows up.
  999. River leaves the way she came in.
  1000. BADGER
  1001. I like her.
  1002. JAYNE
  1003. (quietly, to the crew)
1004. That there -- exactly the kind of diversion we
  1005. could have used.
  1006. INT. MANSION - MAL'S QUARTERS - NIGHT
1007. MAL AND INARA square off, swords in hand.
  1008. INARA
  1009. Attack.
1010. Mal lunges at Inara with his sword. She easily side-steps him, and whacks him on the ass with her sword as he goes by.
  1011. INARA
1012. How did I avoid that?
  1013. MAL
1014. By being fast like a freak?
  1015. INARA
1016. No, because you always attack the same way, swinging
1017. from the shoulder like you were chopping wood. You
1018. have to thrust with the point sometimes, or swing
  1019. from the elbow.
  1020. MAL
1021. Swinging from the shoulder feels stronger.
  1022. INARA
1023. It's also slower, Mal. You don't need strength as much
1024. as speed. We're fragile creatures. It takes less than a
1025. pound of pressure to cut skin.
  1026. MAL
1027. You know that? They teach you that in whore academy?
  1028. INARA
1029. You have a strange sense of nobility Captain. You'll
1030. lay a man out for calling me a whore, and yet you keep
1031. calling me one to my face.
  1032. MAL
1033. I might not show respect to your job, but he didn't
1034. respect you. That's the difference. Inara, he doesn't
  1035. even see you.
  1036. INARA
1037. Well I guess death will solve the issue to everyone's
  1038. satisfaction.
  1039. MAL
1040. This [yu bun duh - "stupid"] duel is the result of the rules of
  1041. your society, not mine.
  1042. INARA
1043. You are always breaking the rules, no matter what society
1044. you're in! You don't get along with ordinary criminals
1045. either, which is why you're constantly getting in trouble.
  1046. MAL
1047. You think following the rules will buy you a nice life,
1048. even if the rules make you a slave.
  1049. (Inara turns away)
  1050. Don't take his offer.
  1051. INARA
  1052. (turning to face Mal)
  1053. What?
  1054. MAL
1055. Don't do it. Because in the case it happens it means
1056. he's the fella that killed me and I don't like fellas
1057. that kill me, just in general. I said before I don't
1058. have call to stop you, and that's true, but anyways, don't.
  1059. INARA
1060. I need to get back. He'll be up early.
  1061. MAL
1062. Right. He's got that big day.
1063. EXT. PERSEPHONE MOON - CADRIE POND - DAY
1064. There are many on-lookers, including Inara and Harrow. The duelists face off and begin parrying. Mal gets a lucky swipe and draws first blood, with a shallow cut to Atherton's chest.
  1065. MAL
  1066. (pleased)
1067. Best be careful, Ath. Hear these things are sharp.
  1068. HARROW
  1069. (incredulous, to Inara)
1070. He thinks he's doing well, doesn't he?
  1071. INARA
  1072. (horrified)
  1073. He's being toyed with.
1074. More dueling, Atherton slashes a shallow cut to Mal's sword arm. Mal attacks rather blindly, flailing his sword broadly from the shoulder. He's obviously out-classed here. Atherton smiles, steps back, and puts both arms behind his back, leaving his chest exposed.
  1075. HARROW
  1076. What's he doing?
  1077. INARA
  1078. Don't fall for that!
1079. Mal attacks, and Atherton spins and stabs Mal in the abdomen. This is a serious wound, but not a killing blow.
  1080. HARROW
1081. Well, this isn't going to take long, is it?
  1082. END OF ACT THREE
  1083. ACT FOUR
1084. EXT. PERSEPHONE MOON - CADRIE POND - DAY
1085. Mal is bloodied, and a bit wobbly on his feet. He continues to fight, though with his free hand clamped over his wound. Atherton is gleeful and poised, supremely confident.
  1086. HARROW
  1087. (to Inara)
1088. We're coming up on the end, Miss. You might not
  1089. want to watch.
1090. Harrow is right, this is almost over. Atherton knocks Mal to his knees, and snaps his sword blade off at the hilt. He stands triumphant over Mal, sword at his throat.
  1091. INARA
  1092. (moving forward)
1093. Atherton, wait! I'll stay here, exclusive to you.
  1094. Just let him live.
1095. Atherton is distracted by Inara, and looks her way. Mal takes his chance then, and knocks Atherton's sword out of his hands, and clubs him across the jaw with the hilt of the broken sword. He quickly kicks up the freed sword and throws it at Atherton, stabbing him through the chest. Atherton manages to pull out the blade, just has Mal clubs him across the face again. Mal picks up the bloody sword, and holds it to the throat of the fallen Atherton.
  1096. HARROW
1097. He's down. You have to finish it, lad. You have to
1098. finish it. For a man to lie beaten, and yet breathing?
1099. It makes him a coward.
  1100. INARA
  1101. It's humiliation.
  1102. MAL
1103. Sure, it's humiliating. Having to lie there while
1104. the better man refuses to spill your blood. Mercy
1105. is the mark of a great man.
1106. (pokes Atherton in the belly with the sword)
  1107. Guess I'm just a good man.
1108. (pokes him again for good measure)
  1109. Well, I'm all right.
1110. Inara puts her arm around the wobbly Mal to support him, and they walk off together.
  1111. ATHERTON
  1112. (calling after them)
  1113. Inara. Inara!
  1114. HARROW
  1115. (to Atherton)
1116. You've lost her lad. Be gracious.
  1117. ATHERTON
1118. You set this up, whore. After I bought and paid for
1119. you. I should have uglied you up so much no one
  1120. else'd want you.
  1121. MAL
  1122. (to Inara)
1123. See how I'm not punching him? I think I've grown.
  1124. ATHERTON
  1125. (to Inara)
1126. Well get ready to starve. I'll see that you
  1127. never work again.
  1128. INARA
  1129. (to Atherton)
1130. Actually, that's not how it works. You see, you've
1131. earned yourself a black mark in the client registry.
1132. No Companion is ever going to contract with you,
  1133. ever again.
  1134. HARROW
  1135. (to Atherton)
1136. You'll have to rely on your winning personality to
1137. get women. God help you.
  1138. (to Mal)
1139. You didn't have to wound that man.
  1140. MAL
1141. Yeah, I know, it was just funny.
  1142. HARROW
1143. (walks away with Inara and Mal)
1144. You willing to fight that hard to protect my property,
1145. I'll have it in your hold before midnight.
1146. Mal shakes hands with Harrow, smile and laughs.
  1147. Harrow walks off.
  1148. MAL
  1149. (to Inara)
  1150. Mighty fine shindig.
1151. INT. SERENITY - CARGO HOLD
  1152. JAYNE
1153. (whispers to the crew around the crate/card table)
1154. Doc is filling Shepherd in on the plan.
  1155. Doc is the diversion.
1156. Light spills in from an opened door.
  1157. MAL
1158. Did you ever see such a lazy crew.
1159. Mal walks in being supported by Inara.
  1160. KAYLEE
  1161. Captain.
  1162. SIMON
  1163. You're hurt.
  1164. BADGER
1165. You get us a deal then?
  1166. MAL
1167. I got a deal. Now get off my ship.
  1168. BADGER
1169. Ta very much for a lovely night, then.
1170. Badger whistles and motions to his gang, and they leave Serenity.
1171. Mal and Inara sit down, Book comes over.
  1172. BOOK
  1173. Are you badly hurt?
  1174. Mal nods.
  1175. JAYNE
1176. We was just about to spring into action, Captain.
1177. Complicated escape and rescue op.
  1178. WASH
1179. I was going to watch. It was very exciting.
1180. Cut to an exterior shot of Serenity flying through space.
  1181. INT. SERENITY - CORRIDORS
1182. Kaylee is walking down the corridors of the ship humming and skipping just a little to herself. She goes to her room, flops onto her bunk, and tunes a tiny speaker to classical music. She stares up at the pink, frilly dress which is hanging over her bed, obviously happy.
1183. INT. SERENITY - CARGO HOLD
1184. Mal and Inara are sitting on the walkway overhead, legs dangling. There is a large glass jug beside them, and they are drinking out of mis-matched cups.
  1185. INARA
1186. Thank you for the wine. It's... very fresh.
  1187. MAL
1188. To Kaylee and her inter-engine fermentation
  1189. system.
1190. They clink cups and Mal winces, a bit more dramatically than necessary.
  1191. INARA
  1192. Are you in pain?
  1193. MAL
1194. Absolutely. I got stabbed, you know, right here.
1195. Mal lifts his shirt to show her the bloody bandage on his abdomen.
  1196. INARA
  1197. (turning away, squeamish)
  1198. I saw.
  1199. MAL
1200. Don't care much for fancy parties. Too rough.
  1201. INARA
  1202. It wasn't entirely a disaster.
  1203. MAL
  1204. (incredulous)
1205. I got stabbed! Right here!
  1206. INARA
1207. You also lined up exciting new crime.
  1208. MAL
1209. It's good to have cargo. Makes us a target for
1210. every other scavenger out there, though, but
  1211. sometimes that's fun too.
  1212. INARA
1213. I am grateful, you know, for the ill-conceived and
1214. high-handed attempt to defend my honor, although
  1215. I didn't want you to.
  1216. MAL
1217. Gracious as that is, looking back, I probably should
1218. have stayed out of your world.
  1219. INARA
1220. My world? If it is that. I wasn't going to stay,
  1221. you know.
  1222. MAL
  1223. Yeah? Why is that?
  1224. INARA
1225. Oh, someone needs to keep Kaylee out of trouble.
1226. And all my things are here. Besides, why would I
  1227. want to leave Serenity?
  1228. MAL
  1229. Can't think of a reason.
1230. Cut to a distance shot of Mal and Inara, drinking companionably. We then see the hold is full of Harrow's cargo... cattle.
  1231. END OF SHOW
