  3. There are 5 sections (40 multiple-choice questions) in Paper 1
  4. • Section A (Vocabulary)
  5. • Section B (Social Expressions)
  6. • Section C (Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling)
  7. • Section D (Text Completion)
  8. • Section E (Reading and Comprehension).
  9. SECTION A (VOCABULARY)
  10. 1. Pupils are tested on vocabulary at the word, phrase and sentence level.
  11. 2. Questions 1 – 4 test vocabulary at word level. Some questions may have pictures.
  12. 3. Questions 5 – 7 test vocabulary at phrase level some questions may have pictures.
  13. 4. Questions 8 – 10 test vocabulary at sentence level. The questions are accompanied by pictures.
  14. 5. Read each question carefully. Study all the options given before choosing the best answer. If pupils are not sure of the answer, choose the elimination process. Cancel the answer which is definitely wrong.
  15. 6. Some questions in this section may include pictures. The pictures provide clues to answer the questions.
  16. SECTION B (SOCIAL EXPRESSIONS)
  17. 1. Questions 11 – 15 test the pupils’ ability to express themselves in different social contexts.
  18. 2. The social expressions tested in the section include:
  19. (a) Greetings / making introductions / farewells
  20. (b) Making request / suggestions
  21. (c) Making and receiving calls
  22. (d) Giving praise / advice / encouragement
  23. (e) Refuting statements
  24. (f) Accepting and declining invitations
  25. (g) Asking to be excused
  26. (h) Asking for permission
  27. (i) Asking for directions
  28. (j) Expressing thanks / appreciation
  29. (k) Expressing concern / apologies
  30. (l) Expressing happiness / pleasure
  31. (m) Showing anger
  32. 3. A conversation between two people is presented in speech bubbles. The situation is presented in the form of graphics. There are 5 pictures given that test various social situations.
  33. 4. Pupils should study the pictures carefully as they will give some clues to answer the questions. Try to match the chosen response with the social expression given.
  34. SECTION C (GRAMMAR)
  35. 1. There are 10 questions in this section which consist of grammatical items, spelling and punctuation.
  36. 2. Questions 16 – 21 test pupils’ grammar proficiency.
  37. 3. Questions 22 – 23 test spelling. Pupils are to identify the correct spelling.
  38. 4. Questions 24 – 25 test pupils’ correct use of punctuation mark.
  39. 5. If pictures are given, study them carefully. The pictures will give you clues to answer the questions.
  40. 6. Although there are only 10 questions in Section C, pupils must have lots of practice to answer them.
  41. SECTION D (TEXT COMPLETION)
  42. 1. There are 5 questions (Questions 26 – 30) testing pupils’ correct usage of grammatical items.
  43. 2. Common grammar items that are usually tested include:
  44. (a) Nouns (g) adjectives
  45. (b) Personal pronouns (h) adverbs
  46. (c) Possessive pronouns (i) subject-verb agreement
  47. (d) Possessive adjectives (j) prepositions
  48. (e) The simple present tense (k) conjunctions
  49. (f) The simple past tense
  50. 3. A composite picture of a scene, event or situation is given. This is followed by a short passage about the picture.
  51. 4. The passage can be narrative, factual or descriptive. There are 5 blanks in the passage.
  52. 5. Study the options given and look for the clues before and after the blanks.
