  28. What kind of server do you currently have? How is it holding so far? I think you should base your next move on your currently resource utilization and if that isn't handling the traffic well, have someone go in and draw a better picture.

  33. I think everyone will need more information on what you're currently running the site on and what your needs are. There is more to this than merely traffic, and a lot of ways to optimize your ability to serve that traffic in addition to availability requirements.

  48. Those look to be general 500 ISE errors which is usually more on the coding side of things. You should have your website reviewed/optimized by a specialist, then you will know what you really need in terms of VPS processing power.

  51. The specs are important but the management is more important here. You'll need a managed host who is willing to dive into your WordPress and figure out the culprit. So make sure your search yields a host who's willing to do that first and foremost.

  56. I agree with UNIXy, but with 400k traffic you also might want to consider a dedicated pro just for optimization. I'm sure hosting companies have good techs but they'll be experts on the server side of things and not necessarily the website coding. When I get 500 errors on my sites I usually just disable the htaccess file which usually brings the site back up then I troubleshoot from there, and in the end I rarely make any changes to the actual hosting settings.
  57. What I'm trying to say is that you can always increase power to get around a site that has issues, and that's always they easiest fix, but you might want to try a different direction first, get your site the best it can be, then search for reliable hosting providers.
