Punkalasa means a filled pot in Sinhalese.
It is further known as “Purna Ghata”.
It is used to symbolize prosperity and luck.
This is kept where national, religious or other ceremonies are held.
This creation had been used for guardstones in Anuradhapura.
This had been again used for Wahalkada decorations.
The number of these creations which had been found in Polonnaruwa was very less.
The Punkalasa which was created in Gampola and Kandyan periods were not very artistic.
This creation is carved on a lotus flower and the pot is decorated using there stripes.
Lotus buds can be seen and they are decorated to the four directions of the Punkalasa.
The mouth of the pot is covered with another lotus flower.
