Preparation of Propenylbenzene from Chloroephedrine
10 grams of sodium carbonate are mixed with 10 grams of chloroephedrine in 40 mL. of ether. 60 mL. of water are added with stirring. The solution is then washed rapidly with ether. The ether extracts are combined, dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. 10 grams of zinc are added and the reaction was allowed to reach a rapid boil under reflux. The reaction was contained by cooling and allowed to continue. The yield of the yellow propenylbenzene (8-8.5 grams) is approximately 80%. Reference: Gero 1951
