There was never an uncertainty that the Nationals would draft Bryce Harper with the No. 1 general pick in the 2010 Draft. The Las Vegas local was gracing the front of Sports Illustrated, hitting 500-foot moonshots at Tropicana Field and setting up junior school details so bombastic that even a computer game would become flushed - all at 16 years of age.
Regardless of whether they'd have the capacity to sign him in time, nonetheless, was especially in question. Washington had until the stroke of midnight on Aug. 17 to complete an arrangement, or else Harper would essentially reemerge the Draft one year from now. Also, as the clock ticked down, it resembled that could very well happen ... until, at precisely 11:59:34 p.m. ET on Aug. 16, he and the Nats went to an assention: a five-year bargain for $9.9 million, including a $6.25 million marking reward and eight semesters of school educational cost.
Seven years, a NL MVP Award and a few remarkable hair styles later, it's protected to state that was an astute speculation.
