  1. About three phones have gone missing in our room in the past five months. When we reported to the School's security, they only told us that it
  2. was a roommate that is responsible.
  3. Everyone of us in the room was waiting for the day we will catch the culprit. Last Tuesday, when we were all asleep; I think it was about 2 am, Ben woke up suddenly and his phone was gone. His phone was the
  4. most expensive of us all. When Ben woke up and couldn't find his phone, he sprang up from the bed and
  5. quickly opened his
  6. cupboard. He rummaged the contents, even
  7. removed his clothes but could still
  8. not find the phone.
  9. I was in the room when it happened; sitting and reading before I dozed off with my heading resting on my books. So when Ben couldn't find his
  10. phone, he gently
  11. shook my shoulders until I woke up.
  12. 'It has happened again', he told me.
  13. I didn't even need to ask what happened as I could see the panic and loss written
  14. in his eyes.
  15. This is the second time his phone had been
  16. stolen. So I took my phone and dialed Ben's
  17. number; just to be sure it had not been
  18. misplaced. 'Error in Connection' was what I saw on the screen of my phone. I dialed it again and it started
  19. ringing not just on
  20. my phone, but the actual ring tone of Ben's Samsung phone was faintly audible.
  21. We were both surprised when we
  22. heard the tone.
  23. I beckoned on Ben to keep quiet as
  24. he was visibly
  25. ready to 'finish' the person who took
  26. his phone. I continued dialing as we moved
  27. silently, following
  28. the direction of the ring tone.
  29. There were four bunks in the room, each with two bed spaces. Ben and I use the same
  30. bunk just beside the door and the sound was
  31. coming from the last bunk at the extreme left corner.
  32. We tiptoed, Ben and I, like Jack Baeur until we
  33. traced the sound to the top bed space on the last bunk.
  34. 'So it is John who had been stealing phones in
  35. this room'. Ben whispered to me.
  36. We shook his leg and woke him up only to find out it was not John sleeping on the
  37. mattress. Neither of us had ever seen the guy
  38. before. To make matters worse, the ringing was coming
  39. from the bag he was using as pillow.
  40. When he woke up, he looked at us
  41. strangely as if
  42. he didn't know why we were there.
  43. We opened the bag and found not
  44. just Ben's
  45. Samsung, but three other phones.
  46. 'So, you are the one who's been
  47. stealing our
  48. phones!'; Ben shouted at him.
  49. Before he could find an excuse, Ben
  50. slapped him
  51. on his left cheek and walked out
  52. looking for
  53. anything to break one or two of the
  54. guy's bones.
  55. I don't know; but there was
  56. something about the
  57. guy. So I asked him,
  58. 'Oga, what are you doing here?'
  59. 'What are you doing with Ben's
  60. phone'.
  61. He was just looking at me without
  62. saying
  63. anything, so I slapped his right
  64. cheek with my left
  65. hand.
  66. 'ANSWER ME!', I screamed at him;
  67. waking up the
  68. roommates who were around.
  69. John had obviously gone to night
  70. class to read
  71. and I assumed the other three
  72. roommates who
  73. were absent had also gone to read.
  74. The two guys remaining in the room
  75. with me and
  76. Ben came and gave their own round
  77. of slaps.
  78. The accused was now staggering
  79. when Ben came
  80. back with a long wood hard enough
  81. to kill the
  82. guy.
  83. As he raised it up, the three of us,
  84. the
  85. roommates, held his hands so he
  86. wouldn't
  87. murder the accused.
  88. Ben dropped the wood and swept
  89. his right leg
  90. against the thief's legs and he fell
  91. down.
  92. Ben had told me before that he had
  93. attended the
  94. Soldiers' recruitment training but
  95. failed the
  96. medical test. I believed him right
  97. then.
  98. I looked at the guy crumple on the
  99. floor and
  100. before Ben killed him, I decided to
  101. interview him,
  102. at least to know who he is.
  103. He was now sitting on the ground
  104. where he
  105. landed from Ben's force.
  106. 'Who are you?'
  107. I asked him again; this time gently.
  108. He was crying but it was only the
  109. tears that were
  110. coming out.
  111. It was then I realized he had not
  112. even uttered a
  113. word since it all started. Not even
  114. when he fell to
  115. the ground.
  116. 'Why are you in our room'? I asked
  117. again.
  118. 'Can you even talk?'
  119. He shook his head then.
  120. I was now confused. Why was he
  121. shaking his
  122. head?
  123. So, I asked again,
  124. 'Can't you talk?'
  125. He shook his head again.
  126. 'Wait, is it that this guy is dumb?', I
  127. asked the
  128. guys.
  129. The guy then nodded his head and
  130. pointed to his
  131. mouth and then shook his head left
  132. to right.
  133. It hit me then.
  134. The guy is dumb but not deaf. That
  135. was the first
  136. time I am seeing a case like that.
  137. My anger changed to pity
  138. immediately.
  139. 'Are you dumb?', I ashamedly asked
  140. the guy to
  141. confirm.
  142. Again, he nodded his head.
  143. 'Can you read and write?'
  144. He nodded again.
  145. 'Get me a pen and note!' I said to
  146. my roommates
  147. over my shoulder.
  148. I collected the pen and wrote on the
  149. note,
  150. 'Who are you? Explain yourself.'
  151. I was almost in tears as I read his
  152. fine
  153. handwriting,
  154. 'My name is James, I am John's elder
  155. brother. I
  156. am a student of Delta State
  157. University. I was
  158. traveling to Delta but our bus
  159. stopped for the
  160. night at Benin. So I decided to sleep
  161. with my
  162. brother till tomorrow morning. He
  163. brought me
  164. here around 12 am and went out to
  165. night class to
  166. read. He gave me the bag to keep
  167. for him. So I
  168. decided to use it as pillow so that it
  169. won't be
  170. stolen'.
  171. I held the note with the guys at my
  172. back as all of
  173. us read it.
  174. I became so weak I almost fell.
  175. 'The guy is innocent.' I needlessly
  176. announced.
  177. When we realized this, even I was
  178. ashamed of
  179. myself.
  180. Ben just stood there with the wood
  181. he almost
  182. used to hit him, looking as if he was
  183. the one who
  184. had been beaten.
  185. I am not sure, but I think I saw
  186. tears in his eyes
  187. as he realized he had just punished
  188. an innocent
  189. man.
  190. So we knelt down; Ben and I, we
  191. knelt down and
  192. clasped our hands so he will know
  193. we were really
  194. sorry.
  195. With tears in our eyes, we told him,
  196. 'We are sorry. Sorry for accusing you
  197. wrongly and
  198. beating you for it'.
  199. The dumb guy just smiled with
  200. bleeding lips from
  201. the blow I gave him. He smiled and
  202. looked into
  203. our eyes. And I could see pity in his
  204. eyes.
  205. He smiled and shook his head and
  206. then wrote in
  207. the same paper.
  208. 'It is Alright. I took the pain
  209. willingly. Please
  210. don't beat my brother anymore. I
  211. knew why you
  212. were beating me. John had always
  213. been a thief,
  214. right from home. But please don't
  215. report or beat
  216. him again'.
  217. Tears dropped from my eyes as I
  218. read his
  219. sacrifice. He deliberately allowed us
  220. beat him just
  221. so that John will be free.
  222. I lend my hand and raised him up
  223. as I used my
  224. cloth to wipe the tears from his face
  225. and blood
  226. from his lips.
  227. It was then my own tears flowed
  228. from the
  229. corners of my eyes.
  230. ..
  231. Although this story is 100% fiction,
  232. this is what
  233. Jesus did for us on the cross of
  234. calvary. kept
  235. quiet and even died so that we can
  236. be saved. He
  237. never protested his innocence but
  238. bore it all for
  239. us. He gave his life for you. What
  240. have you given
  241. for him?
  242. Someone shared with me, don't
  243. forget to also share
  244. *JESUS SAVES
