REGISTERS
Registers are special terms or words that are used by members of a particular profession, occupation, vocation or group. They are called jargons because individuals outside the confine of a disciplinary boundary and such words difficult to understand. The English language has many registers.
REGISTERS IN MEDICINE AND SURGERY
1. Vasectomy- Male sterilization through surgery.
2. Lobotomy- Surgical operation on the frontal lobe of the brain to treat certain mental illness.
3. Euthanasia- mercy killing.
4. Psychiatry- The branch of medicine that deals with studies and treatments of nature and cause of an illness.
5. Diagnosis- Identification of nature and cause of an illness.
6. Prognosis- A forecast of the future course of a disease or disorder based on medical knowledge.
7. Surgery- A procedure involving major incisions to remove, repair or replace a part of a body.
8. Therapy- Treatment of disease or disability, physical or mental.
9. Scalpel- A surgical blade.
10. Gynecology- A branch of medicine that deals with diseases of female reproductive system.
11. Medicine- The study and treatment of disease and injuries
12. Amnesia- Memory loss
13. Anemia- Blood shortage
14. Theatre- A special place where surgeries take place in hospitals.
15. Amputation- Removal of body parts via surgeries.
16. Ophthalmology- The anatomy, functions, pathology and treatment of the eye.
17. Optician- A person who makes or dispenses lenses, spectacles etc.
18. Anatomy- The science that deals with the form and structure of organic bodies; anatomical structure or organization.
19. Physiology- A branch of biology that deals with the functions and activities of like or of living matter and of physical and chemical phenomena involved.
20. Examination- An inspection by a doctor or other medically qualified person to establish the extent and nature of any sickness or injury.
21. Drug- A substance used to treat an illness to relieve a symptom or modify chemical process in the body for specific purpose.
22. Transfusion- The transfer of blood or blood products from one individual to another.
23. Sedative- An agent or drug that sedates, having a calming or soothing effect or inducing sleep.
24. Gerontology- The study of the elderly, and of the aging process itself.
25. Pathology- The branch of medicine concerned with the study of the nature of disease and its causes, processes, development and consequences.
LAW AND JURISPUDENCE
1. Writ- A writ is a legal document that orders a person to do a particular thing
2. Subpoena- A writ requiring someone to appear in court to give testimony.
3. Jurisprudence- The philosophy, science and study of law and decisions based on the interpretation thereof.
4. Jury- A group of individuals chosen from the general population to hear and decide a case in a court of law.
5. Verdict- A decision on an issue of fact in a civil or criminal case or an inquest.
6. Judge - A public official whose duty is to administer the law especially by presiding over trials and rendering judgments, a justice.
7. Juror- A member of a jury
8. Prosecution- The institution of legal proceedings (particularly criminal) against a person.
9. Summon- It is an official order issued to appear in court for interrogation over a matter or case before the court.
10. Convict- A person convicted of a crime by a judicial body,
11. Felon- A person who has been tried and convicted of a felony.
12. Pro-bono- A tree legal service offered by a barrister to a client.
13. Complainant- The party that brings to a civil lawsuit against another, the plaintiff.
14. Suit- The attempt to gain an end by legal process, a process instituted in a court of law for the recovery of a right or claim.
15. Perjury- The deliberate giving of false or misleading testimony under oath.
16. Evidence- Anything admitted by a court to prove or disprove alleged matters of fact in a trial’
17. Acquittal- A setting free, or deliverance from an offense by a court of law.
18. Sentence- The judicial order for a punishment to be imposed on a person convicted of a crime.
19. Litigation- The conduct of a lawsuit
20. Guilty- Judged to have committed a crime.
21. Litigant- A party suing or being sued in a lawsuit.
22. Counsel- A lawyer
23. Homicide- The unlawful killing of a person by another.
24. Adjudication- A judgment or sentence.
25. Bailiff- A legal officer to whom some degree of authority is committed.
RELIGION
1. Agnosticism- The philosophical position that the existence or non-existence of God is unknowable.
2. Animism- The belief that every material form of reality has an indwelling spirit.
3. Atheism- Disbelief in any deity or supernatural power.
4. Blasphemy- Indignity offered to God.
5. Eucharist- The sacrament of the Lords’ supper.
6. Heresy- False doctrines or teaching.
7. Ecumenical- Worldwide.
8. Gnosticism- The belief that salvation is obtained by means of secret knowledge.
9. Fatwa- A legal opinion, decree or ruling, issued by a mufti or other Islamic lawyers.
10. Sacrament- A sacred act or ceremony in Christianity.
11. Hell/ Hades- A place of eternal torment meant for Satan, demons and sinners.
12. Supplication- Prayers on behalf of someone else.
13. Martyr- A person who suffers very much or is killed for his/ her religious beliefs.
14. Apocrypha- Christian religion texts which are not considered to be genuine.
15. Apocalypse- Destruction of the world.
16. Pagan- A person who holds religious beliefs that are not part of any of the world’s main religions.
17. Altar- A holy table in a church or temple.
18. Exorcism- The act of getting evil spirit from a place or a person’s med by prayers or magic
19. Celibacy- The practice of not getting married for religious reasons.
20. Paradise- A perfect place where people are said to go when they die.
MARRIAGE
1. Marriage- The union between a man and a woman to become husband and wife.
2. Wedding- Marriage ceremony
3. Dowry- Money and property that in some societies, a wife or her family must pay to her husband when they get married or money or property that, in some societies, a husband must pay to his wife’s family when they get married.
4. Exogamy- Marriage outside one’s family or caste.
5. Endogamy- Marriage within one’s family or caste.
6. Polyandry- A form of marriage whereby a woman marries more than one husband.
7. Polygamy- The custom of having more than one wife at the same time.
8. Misogamy- Hatred of marriage.
9. Misogynist- Hatred of women.
10. Infidelity- Unfaithfulness in marriage.
11. Bastard- A child born outside wedlock.
12. Divorce- Legal ending of a marriage.
13. Elopement- The practice of running away with somebody in order to marry them secretly.
14. Estrangement- The state of being estranged. That is, no living with your husband or wife.
15. Bride- A woman on her wedding day.
16. Groom- The man on his wedding day.
17. Matrimony- The stage of being married.
18. Maternity- The state of becoming a mother.
19. Paternity- The state of becoming a father.
GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS
1. Bills- A proposed law.
2. Legislature- The organ of government that makes laws. It is also known as parliament (UK), congress (U.S.A), National Assembly (Nigeria) etc.
3. Filibuster- A long speech made in parliament in order to delay a vote or passage of bill.
4. Power- The capacity to influence the behaviours of others through threat or sanction.
5. Republic- A country governed by a president and politicians elected by the people.
6. Gerontocracy- A form of oligarchy premised on old age.
7. Revolution- An attempt by a large member of people, to change the government of a country, especially by violent action.
8. Judiciary- The organ of government that interprets and adjudicates the law.
9. Sovereignty- The supreme power of a state to make and enforce the law without external interference.
10. Executive- The organ of government that makes and executes public policies. It also executes or implements the law.
11. Authority- It is the right to command and for the people to obey.
12. State- A politically organized geographical entity (a country).
13. Nation- A group of people with the same culture, language, ancestry and shared values.
14. Democracy- Government by its concept of the governed.
15. Election- Process through which leaders are elected in a democracy.
16. Citizen- A legal and political member of a country.
17. Fascism- A totalitarian and authoritarian form of government established in Italy by Benito Mussolini in 1922.
18. Tyrant- A despot or dictator.
19. Aristocracy- Government nobility.
20. Constitution- Fundamental principles, rules and regulations by which the country is governed.
