Santi Cazorla has revealed he almost had his foot amputated in what will be a shocking revelation to both Arsenal fans and neutrals.
The Spain international has not played for the Arsenal first-team for a year after picking up an Achilles injury at the start of last season and underwent a staggering eight operations since the initial injury in a desperate bid to return.
But his career was almost over after he picked up an infection.
In an emotional interview with MARCA, Cazorla has revealed how doctors considered amputating his foot.
He was also told he would be lucky if he walked again as the 32-year-old faced up to the prospect of never playing again.
Cazorla lost an incredible eight centimetres from his tendon and required skin of his arm to cover the wound - featuring his tattoo.
He has spent a large chunk of his recovery in Spain while his family reside at his home in London.
He is now hopeful of returning to action in the new year after posting an injury update a couple of weeks ago.
Arsene Wenger recently said: "The first signs are positive, but still he has not played for one and a half years.
"He is not in full training yet, he needs a few games with the reserve team. So I think if all goes well, it will be after Christmas."
