  7. One popular assumption is that there is some kind of problem with having an ego. What is the justification for this?
  8. Most of the people I know / know of, who are exceptional have egos. Is the anti-ego philosophy a cover up for mediocrity?
  9. Having too much ego appears to have negative effects on the individual and their ability to perceive the world around them, but is that to say one should go without any ego? My own opinion again is that the exceptional people I know / know of, tend to have a degree of egotism.

  23. I was just thinking about this exact question.
  24. The best I could come up with, and it's a pretty absurd answer, is the individual ego separates the collection of us. That is, if you are a "team player " and all. If you don't mind the mental distancing then there really is no problem.

  65. There is a difference of being proud of accomplishing something. Beethoven had good music. Terence was a visionary. These neighbors of mine, ya know, just the most idiotic. It's an insecurity, some sort of neurosis. The truck thing is one of my favorites. If anybody could use some fucking mushrooms. I saw a dude back when I was in high school who peeled out all the time :congrats: :haha:

  81. Beethoven was definitely egotistical, he held himself above general humanity.
  82. In general there seems to be more ego going around than substance, and I can't think of anyone worth a damn who goes past a certain point with their ego.

  94. I think an inflated ego is negative for purely utilitarian reasons. It can lead to psychological blind spots, carelessness due to over confidence, stagnation from not feeling a need to improve, and it can be a turn off to those around you who might've proved important allies in accomplishing your objectives. I guess whatever you think in your head is fine if you can keep it to yourself and avoid those pitfalls, but for me trying to keep ego in check seems prudent.

  175. Healthy egotism is having an ego that is based in reality, unhealthy egotism is having an ego based in delusions. The healthy ego is willing to change and conform to it's reality, where as the unhealthy one is stubborn and refuses to budge.

  295. I think the justification is the experience of transpersonal states of consciousness. The ego has to die, in a manner of speaking, in order to experience states of being beyond the ego. Then the ego is reborn as the state wears off. Ego death and rebirth is a part of enlightenment.
  296. I wouldn't say there is a problem with having an ego. Not at all. It's just that there is more to us than that.
