So new version fails or has defects on 2 out of 2 computers tried it on, old classic version worked on 2 out of 2 computers!!! This helps keeping your important conversations, even transactions, when you use Skype.
As far I know when they bought Skype, at Skype Technologies already planned to include ads. As part of that push, the Microsoft-owned company has sent out messages to users this week noting that it will be retiring a host of older iterations on July 1. Microsoft has been sending emails to people who are still using the old version of Skype to upgrade to the new version or risk losing the conversations. I don't know if it'll solve this particular issue with the not-making-or-receiving-calls. I know I've found it confusing to have two different versions of Skype Modern and Desktop available on my Windows 8.

We don't always all work 100 % full screen - especially if large monitors and a few concurrent appls running. Hi there -- stuff is missing like video calls etc etc --it's probably all there but so much less intuitive to use - I'm sticking with the version I've installed until it won't work any more. Decent built in webcam which works fine on other applications so no driver issues there and microphone --could be a bit better but that's hardware and built in is more convenient than a separate piece of kit - for a laptop certainly. These settings only apply to the new apps not old Win32 programs like the legacy Skype. The Skype legacy and web access work fine.
