  14. 4 times this setup:
  15. 2 Cores
  16. 2GB RAM
  17. 50GB SSD
  18. Windows 2008 R2 Std
  19. This costs me 20 USD/month each, so in total 80 USD/month.
  20. Now I'm looking to reduce costs. I'm using the VPSs for remote desktop.
  21. What are your suggestions for cheaper alternatives?
  22. It's have to be cheaper for sure if you order dedicated server like a 12GB RAM, 8 cores (or even less, depend of your CPU utilization on every VPS) with ~250GB SSD and pay once for setup Proxmox virtual machine environment.
  23. Similar server costs about 30-40 EUR at NL or DE and Proxmox setup ~40 EUR once.
  24. You have a decent deal considering that the price includes Windows licenses. You may not find anything cheaper.

  26. Really? Most offers for 2 GB RAM nowadays are under $20, as the Windows license is not that expensive

  28. You are wrong, possible to find cheaper without windows license and activate trial of Windows on 180 days.

  31. It's not just virtual servers in Netherlands, United States and UK! It's like bare metal and sometimes even more! New VPS's on Dell R730xd with 2 х Intel Dodeca-Core Xeon E5-2650 v4 that you never seen before, dedicated SSD and HDD drives or NVMe PCIe SSD for boost your performance!

  33. Which may break EULA in either case and without a license would be piracy... are you suggesting to pirate?

  38. Microsoft offers 180 days evaluation period for end users (official trial).
  39. I don't care about EULA because don't have any agreements with Microsoft.
  40. If its option breaks some of their agreements - they must disable this option.

  43. RE: Reduce costs
  44. I've been using a host called BuyVM lately, and it's good for the price.
  45. You get 2GB of RAM for only 7 dollars + free license. Pretty good!
  46. Do you have preferable hosting location? It looks price is really cheap for vps with windows

  49. I think we need more information in regards to why the OP originally opted for 4 individual systems before we can just go throwing dedicated servers in as a solution.
  50. While he's unhappy to pay 4x the premium license each month, which is understandable. there is also probably a reason for this network configuration. Not just an expensive accident.

  52. I'm using 4 systems because the software I'm using a limit of X instances per system.
  53. The location that I need is London, UK.

  57. Wow!?!?!?!?!? I can say that Microsoft has started doing audits of datacenters again, like they did several years ago. And its up to the end user to abide by the EULA and if they find you have not followed it, they can and more then likely will take you court. You do have an agreement with Microsoft when you install and accept the EULA. This has been proven in court many times.
  58. Microsoft can not detect the environment that you are installing the software, directly into the fact that if you own the hardware or not. Now if you own the hardware and want to test Windows under the trial, then you are 100% in your right. The second they determine you do not own the hardware, expect charges of piracy and a lawsuit to come your way.
  59. Secondly if you allow this type of behavior on your servers you own and resell, fully expect the server to be detained as evidence until the court case is settled, leaving you without the hardware and your client(s) down during this time.
  60. Think Im lying, do a little bit of case study research and you will find cases of them going in and taking whole racks of VPS servers where the hosting company allowed the 180 trial software on the VPSes.

  69. Why would they allow a 180 trial if you can't use it??

  71. Why would they allow a 180 trial if you can't use it??
  72. Its for people that own their own hardware to test out Windows and see if its going to work for their application (use) of the server.
  73. It also states that you use it "internally demonstrate and evaluate it. You may not use the software in a live operating environment."
  74. So say for example, you are running a valid copy of 2008 R2 on a server and you want to test your web application on 2016 and IIS 10.0. Then you can take hardware you own and fire up a trial license and test the web application internally. The second you start allowing all traffic to go to the 2016 server, you are required to purchase a full license.
  75. The above example only works though if you own the server. If you are leasing a server a from a hosting company and in turn lease a VPS for the above situation, you are not legally allowed to use the trial license at all and Microsoft can and has sued people over this.
  76. Again there is no way for Microsoft to know if you own the hardware or not as many people co-locate servers all the time. So instead what they preform period audits of data centers. Its real easy to determine if a server is running Windows or not, if it has an internet connection then its just a matter of asking for proper documentation from the data center on the hardware and if it can not be provided, they can and often will file initial charges and then ask for warrant.
  77. If you want to take your chances and your hosting company allows you to run the trial software, then by all means go for it. There is a chance you may never get caught, but if you do, I have seen fines as high as $100,000 per license awarded to Microsoft. I like risking my money too, but prefer to do it at Casinos and on the Lottery.
